Windows 7 Browsers

As we now know - the Eurocrats have prevented Microsoft from bundling Internet Explorer (and possibly Windows Mail) in the new operating system because they feel it is unfair to Microsoft's competitors.

This means that it will not be possible to upgrade an existing XP or Vista system (which have the web programmes built in) and it will be necessary to do a format and clean install of Windows 7.

Microsoft have stated that they will make IE8 and Windows mail available as free downloads.

I must be a bit of a dumcluck - because it strikes me that if you do the necessary format and clean install of Windows 7 - you now have a nice shiny operating system - but without any means for getting on the internet because you do not have a browser installed. Hence you cannot download one - be it IE8, Firefox or whatever.

I guess what you will have to do is download a browser onto another partition or removable media so that you have the necessary file "in stock" for installation after Windows 7 is installed. Or have I missed something obvious..?..................

According to a few stories on the web, Microsoft are to offer a choice of browsers in Windows 7:

Good thinking, Alan!

However, you do not necessarily need a browser to download things; you could always use FTP to download a browser installer.

For instance Mozilla Firefox 3.5 is available from here [color=#0000FF]ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/latest/win32/en-GB/Firefox Setup 3.5.1.exe

To download this without a browser, you will need to start the Windows FTP client

  • Start -> Run -> cmd [Enter]
  • cd \
  • ftp ftp.mozilla.org
  • User: anonymous
  • Password: (your email address)
  • cd pub/firefox/releases/latest/win32/en-GB
  • bin
  • get Firefox Setup 3.5.1.exe
  • quit
  • exit

The above sequence is not 100% correct, but something like this might be needed to download a browser installer. There is probably also an FTP download for Internet Explorer.

Not sure how a novice computer user will cope with this...

IE 8 can already be downloaded separately. I have it on a memory stick already, as a stand by in case of problems with my computer. It seems to me that no matter what Microsoft do, the EU will not be satisfied. They have accused MS of stifling competition by including IE in Windows, then accused them of offering less choice by issuing Windows 7 without a browser. For heavens sake, don't these bureaucrats have anything worth worrying about to occupy their tiny minds. Plenty of browsers are already on offer for those who want to disable IE and install them. I tried FF and didn't get on with it, so uninstalled it. It was MY personal choice, likewise, when I had my new computer late last year I chose to shun Vista and stick with XP. Europe seems to be over concerned with nannying every mortal thing.:angry::angry:

That's interesting pat - and quite revealing.

I doubt that Bill's old granddad would be able to struggle through the procedure though.......................

I am not surprised, the last I heard he didn't own a computer. :D

I have never even heard of him.

Yound billy's old granddad is a legend round 'ere. Had you have known him you would surely have the basis for another lovely tale in your series. Perhaps you can wite about not knowing him and those rich pleasures you thus missed out on - or sumat like that.

The family were best known as weather experts - hence the Midlands expression - "It's black over Bill's mothers" pior to the inevitable downpour.

andsome has 'eard of 'im - but was unaware that he 'ad a computer. That's because Bill's granddad didn't want people to know he had succumbed to a new fangled invention..............

There are instructions regarding the installation of browsers on the W7E website. I expect these will be shipped with the disk as well.

At the time of writing this, the promised W7 version of IE8 has yet to appear but it will be available before the launch as a download and on a paid for (nominal charge) CD.

On our test machine the current version of Firefox works OK and I've just tried Opera with no problems.

Blame the faceless wonders in Brussels for this fiasco.

I entirely agree with your view on this and am also fed up with EU interference

It's strange that the EU haven't also fined Apple for bundling it's browser (Safari) with it's O/S although this could be because Apple's O/S doesn't have as big a market share as Windows?

The media would have you believe that with respect to corruption and lining their pockets - our MP's are saints compared with those in Brussels.

Perhaps Apple have found a way to get left alone................................
