AlanHo Posted September 17, 2009 Report Share Posted September 17, 2009 Since the Italy holiday went pear shape - we have decided to spend some time in God's country and have rented a cottage in the Yokshire Dales for a few days.There is not much chance of an internet connection up there - so I will have to manage without my daily dose of WF for a while. Traffic was very heavy on the way in from the A1 so we decided to make use of the York park-and-ride system where you park for free outside the city centre and travel in by bus. The return bus fare is normally £2.30 but us wrinklies were able to use our free bus passes.After a very enjoyable day we had to catch the bus back to the car park and were about 50 yards away from the bus stop when the bus arrived and stayed there with its doors open as we hurried to catch it. There was a guy in a uniform talking to the driver as we approached the bus. We were literally 5 yards from the doors and in clear view of the driver when he closed the doors. The bus was not able to depart because it was trapped in a queue of stationary traffic and I waved to the driver to open the doors. The guy in the Transport uniform said – “he can’t open the doors mate – it’s against union rules. Once the doors are closed the driver is not allowed to open them again. The union are very ‘elf ‘n safety conscious”.We then had to stand there for a full 3 minutes looking at the closed doors and the smug looking driver before the traffic moved and he was able to depart.We engaged the Transport official in a pointed conversation about the stupidity of the situation and all he did was keep quoting the mantra “It’s union rules mate – once the doors are closed they can’t be opened again”. By his own admission, it was not a rule set by the Transport Company – but by the union. Makes you wonder who is really running the country don’t it.
