Over the last couple of years I've been replacing our incandescent light bulbs with the long life compact flurescent type. A shart while ago the one above mt desk, here, flickered and died. Thought these things were supposed to go on for 5 to 8 years! Switched off and was it hot at the base. fortunately I was able to switch on the desk lamp to enable me to screw in the original incandescent bulb. Now do I stick with this bulb, must be all of 10 years old or be environmentally unfriendly and buy one of these shorter life cf types?

It is a problem, doug.

When we moved here nine years ago, most of the lighting was the usual incandescent variety and I do not like that at all.

I had rewired the old house, over in the dales, and had fitted it up with fluorescents pretty well every where, due to several factors:- 1) at the time I had access to a lot of fittings that were for "thank you", 2) because watt for watt you get a better light output and 3) I am a Yorkshireman££££

Well, the first bulb that failed when we moved in here, was a 100w tungsten thing, in what is now the dining room. The wonderful world of environmentally friendly long life energy saving bulb had just commenced and so I thought I would try one.

What a dreadful thing it turned out to be. It was a 60watt thing, which was supposed to give out more light than a 100w. In actual fact it gave out less than a 40W one when it was switched on initially, but true to the blurb it did give out more when it got warmed up .....about 45W worth.

I went right through the bungalow eventually and put fluorescents everywhere, with the exception of a big walk-in airing cupboard, and into that I put the 60 watt energy saving thing. It lasted about three months in total. We had really pushed the boat out when we got the 60 watt marvel...we bought two. The second one lasted a similar time in a TV lamp.

They are in my mind a big con. They may well use less electricity, but they are a washout on the light output front. The florescent tubes are more expensive to fit initially but they give much better lighting at a much lower cost.
