Labtec 800 wireless mouse.

I recently decided to cast off the shackles of Ludditism (temporarily) and went forth and bought a Labtec 800 wireless mouse.

Has anyone had experience of one of these little beauties, or am I on my own?

To describe it as touchy and temperamental is an understatement. The mouse is unwilling to connect to its transmitter without much repeated pressing of buttons and, even when a contact has been made, it is impossible to "tune" it to sensible and predictable movement by use of the mouse control panel settings.

I find it difficult to believe that my wireless router can be interfering because one would expect Labtec to have taken this into account. Millions of computers have such a set up.

Has anyone any thoughts on this please?

Granted I am using Ubuntu, but the problem is not with the OS. I am using the same MB USB port as I use without problem for my normal "cooking" mouse, so I think the problem lies outside the box.

Unless things have changed since you last mentioned your operating system, do you still have Windows 98 installed. It may be possible that something as modern as your new rodent is not designed for this O/S. Just a thought. :D

I still have the box with W98 in it, but that is in the back bedroom slowly "maturing" and totally disconnected from the world.

Try this, go into the snyaptic package manager and install a program called btnx, see if that does the trick.

If not I use this mouse http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/notebook...84&cl=hk,en, this is compatable with any Linux distro with a 2.6 kernel or above.

This is where i brought mine.

Thanks for that Alan.

I went looking for btnx, but it is not in the various repositories that I have "installed".

After Googling and reading about btnx I came to the conclusion that all the farting about, and danger of sinking the ship, was not worth the effort just for the sake of throwing off the cloak of Ludditism. So I shall see what happens with it on my old Windows box next time I start it up. I have a PS2/USB adapter.

I received a new mouse in the post this morning and it works as it should with the original tramsmitter.

Another hurdle overcome.

I have not yet fully got to grips with the two extra side buttons (for paging back and forwards) yet.

Might have to "saw" them off.

Is it that crappy little one from Tesco? I can't remember the model name and stuff.

If it is, I had a problem with that one much like this. You just have to press the blue receiver's button once so that it begins to flicker then the button on the mouse and it should work.

No it is a normal sized one. I have awful troubles with those small ones, such as they seem to supply with laptops. I had my hand stamped on playing rugby over sixty year ago, and as a result the little finger on my right hand got severely smashed and the joint at the first joint above the knuckle had to be set. It was a case of set it bent or straight, and so it was set 45 degrees bent. Handy I suppose if one picked ones nose with the right little fingure at 45 degrees, but a right pain for other things.

So even with a full sized mouse I have the odd problem.

I had to take up the tin whistle instead of the recorder.
