Chris
I Have a 5.1 speaker setup for the PC and the sound is awesome. Especially when playing games. However for watching a DVD the screen is to small. Whilst my TFT is 18.1 inches nothing can beat a Widescreen TV.The setup for both PC and TV is not ideal. So i'm guessing i'm missing out on TRUE surround sound...The DVD player connected to the TV only has the ability to play Dolby Digital and not DTS sound! :(However the PC has the ability to play both Dolby Digital and DTS sound. Whilst the two systems are setup differently i cannot hear a difference to make me choose to listen (and watch) a DVD in either Dolby Digital or DTS...The PC's 5.1 setup is only good for games and listening for music.Whilst the TV's setup is PERFECT for watching a DVD.The question however is do you benefit from having such setups?Well as i like and enjoy sound very much i do benefit. Games on the PC are highly enjoybale to play. The sound makes it so much more fun.DVD's to watch on the TV make it so much more enjoyable. If any of you have seen "SwordFish" with John Travolta...The bit where the bomb goes of and the camera does a 360 around the explosion. The effect of the 5.1 is amazing there...This however is with only 5.1 sound. For the computer there is 6.1 and 7.1 sound. News Flash 8.1 Sound is now here, well nearly...Also there is the question of speakers as i believe there is only one set of speakers that are 7.1.Extra speakers to improve the effect. For the TV i have only ever seen 5.1 setups...Blade II (wesley Snipes) has a special 6.1 DTS sound track...Would i benefit? For watching TV the DVD player can be set to "TV" to take advantage of its Dolby Pro Logic decoder...So watching the TV can be slightly improved with this (extra sound). In fact i never watch anything on the TV without the setting on the DVD player. The two speakers on the TV do not get used. Also a few DVD's have THX (Lucas Film) and i have never come across a DVD player that has the decoder for THX.The Audigy2 i think does, but again this is for the computer! What is your say on Surround Sound? Bluecow
surround on the telly in the living room, but the pc also lives in the same room , so the missus won't allow it (more speakers than pictures on the wall!!)If I'm listening to music or games I put my headphones on.Some of the films you can buy really do sound amazing with a good setup (action especially)

Chris
I should say:It's only worth it, if you really need it. I mean just listening to Windows Sounds on 5.1 would be stupid...If you have £1K Stereo then why use the computer?

AlanHo
Can I post a note of caution guys.I don't want to be a spoilsport but.......My hearing has been damaged by industrial noise but I know several young people amongst friends and family with severely impaired hearing due to exposing themselves to high sound levels - be it discos, music in the car or hi-fi at home.None of us believe it can happen to us - but it does - and then it's too late.Enjoy your 2.1 or 5.1 or whatever for the quality - but keep the sound at a reasonable volume for your own future good.
