Im doing a bit of research and I was wondering if you could cast your minds back to how it felt to be an internet virgin!!!

What were you expecting......... and what did you find in reality.

Were you disappointed and if so why?

Were you amazed and if so why?

What didn't you understand....... did you make any big mistakes? If yes, what were they.

What would have been really useful to you???

And any other comments you would care to make about your first tentative steps onto the internet.

I did'nt quite know what to expect the very first time.

Fright or nervousness springs to mind.

I stuck on my ISP's home page for ages not knowing what to do next.

The first annoying thing I found was accidently clicking a link and millions of pages opening up and I just could not shut them down fast enough. The more I closed, the more they seemed to open.

I used to end up disconnecting from the web, closing all the pages and then reconnecting.

I did'nt know a thing about Anti-Virus and Firewalls back then, so I must of been very lucky not to have got any viruses or trojans.

Now iv'e got every protection going and I'm as paranoid as Damo & Powerless.

Errr me paranoid?

First time on the net, me dad goes "wheres the sex sites" so yup, of we were on the Adult ones...Boy i'd never seen such huge FONTS.

Hey i was young ( still am  )

But thats where i learnt about Diallers and that nothing is for free ;) Well that was a shame. I did find a few dirty movies though...

Hey i was young ( still am  )

Anyway so yeah first time on the net and i was devirginised ;) But then i found my hobby websites, football ones, Formula 1  ones and lots of other stuff.

Especially A search engine, at the time i was using every flippin search engine. Apart from google becasue i thought it was crap :o

Also on dialup and found it a pain for the pages to load. There was the two hour cuttoff and at the time it was Pay as you go so only 2 hours a night on the net a night for me. But i sneaked on because there was so more for me to discover...

However there was a phone bill off £124 compared to the normal £16 a month - Whoops...Had to control the urges ;)

Anyway -

"What were you expecting......... and what did you find in reality" Lots of porn websites - and in relaity found loads of them more than i could imagine!

"Were you disappointed and if so why?"  Apart from the 2 hour off, NO!

"Were you amazed and if so why?" Well yeah a teenager with access to porn...Need i say more?

"What didn't you understand....... did you make any big mistakes? If yes, what were they." I actually understood it. No big mistakes that i can think off.

What would have been really useful to you??? Faster connection for one. Thats it, i mean to me the net was self explanatory...

"And any other comments you would care to make about your first tentative steps onto the internet." Back thenit was innocent. I did have AV software and only ever had one virus (maybe 2). Never heard a firewall...Spyware - did the word exist?...

Now i think the web is spolied by all the AV, firewall, spyware, keep updating, windows updates aaarrrgghh I just want to surf and not worry like i did back then!

Well i dont actually worry anymore becasue using the web, has taught meslef, dont downlaod this, and all that other crap that i have learnt.

Now i know whats, what!

:) I'm a happy surfer...

What were you expecting......... and what did you find in reality.: I expected to find easily what I was looking for - I most definately didn't!!

Were you disappointed and if so why?: So many sites! And the length of time I sat waiting for pages to download!! And then to find they were mostly in USA.And the high cost of Pay as you go.

Were you amazed and if so why?: Incredulous that there was so much info at the click of the mouse.

What didn't you understand....... did you make any big mistakes? If yes, what were they.: The use of minimizing sites - I kept closing them and having to write in the www. etc. No idea how to use Favourites. I think I was probably more of an internet virgin than a lot of people (or just stupid)

What would have been really useful to you???: To have been told about a toolbar like Google - was it there a few years ago? And to know that I should write 'uk' after things.

And any other comments you would care to make about your first tentative steps onto the internet.: All the pop ups drove me mad with confusion - It would have been helpful to know about the Pop up Stoppers

I bought clip art and other useless things - no-one said anything about all the freebies you can download. No-one said about needing flash or Shockwave to play all the silly games.

Even going to classes doesn't prepare you for the confusion of surfing.

I hate to confess but I began to surf with AOL  constantly updating connection numbers often busy.

My stepson learnt of the dangers of visiting various sites and diallers, 'The Sun' page 3 site icon appeared on the desktop :D

The 1st thing I ever searched for on the internet was Graphics drivers, after an uninstall of software took them out too. :(

Slow surfing speed teed me, off the wwwait.

Then I discovered the joys of BB and the perils of Spyware etc, been fighting it ever since

I use to just play console games megadrive, snes, pcengine etc thought the internet sounded boring, then I got a dreamcast and connected by that and I was hooked, they had some great forums at the dreamarena and the online gaming was not bad, best thing no a/v or firewall to worry about or diallers or crap like that, pity sega went bust as the dreamcast was and still is a good machine.

My first time online was at a mates house a few miles away from where I live.

He used to log on and receive Amiga games from a cracker-friend of his....it was ridiculously expensive and online time was kept to an absolute minimum.(Bearing in mind that Amiga games weren't exactly huge files but download speeds were rather slow at the time).

My first actual times I spent on the internet proper were at a good friends house.I was absolutely amazed....It was a revelation to me....So much information,so little time!!!!!!

I sorted out my own PC(pentium 133,2 MB grfx card,6.4GB HDD,cack modem and surfed the net for the first time alone @ 33.600kbps!!

And I was in pr0n heaven...and emulater heaven....and mp3 heaven...I didn't know which way to turn

I have always used yahoo.co.uk as my homepage and in them days I used Copernic as my No 1 search engine...I could find out anything about anyone...Superb!!!!

Previous isp's include IC24 - totally free but limited times to log on,like 8pm til 12 midnight with a 1 hour cut-off limit and force9 which was ok at the time...Free isp charging pay-as-you-go on BT rates.

Cheers.

Shirl.

I was a bit like Shirley Crabtree my first ISP was IC24 for free between 8-12 at night wondering whether the thing would actual dial in and connect..........

The family sat round the monitor as I typed in www.yahoo.co.uk and it appeared........... now what????????? no-one really knew what to do so we clicked some links etc and played about. We had all this information in front of us but no-one knew how to get at it we had read about the internet etc , but after are first go on there we were left with a "is that what's all the fuss is about" feeling.

We bought some books (rough guide, dummies etc) and now the pc constantly on the cbeebies site or elsewhere, couldn't live without it now.

Best thing I learnt to do was type the name of where we wanted to go to then press Ctrl and enter to fill in the www. and the .com bit
