johnoo
I have been told that there is no such thing as a silly question, but......I do weekly backups of all data on my "C" Drive to a Microvault Flash Drive, and this includes:-Full E mail back up (I use Yahoo backup system)Contacts File (I backup as a CSV file)Bookmarks (By exporting to C Drive from Internet Explorer)All other files on "C" drive are also backed up.All Pictures and Music is Backed up to external media ie CD'sWhat would I gain from doing further backup of the system? If system crashes I have the installation disc so can't see that as a problem, or am I wrong?I keep reading on forum topics the need to do regular backup and I agree, but am I doing enough? catgate
This always seems to me to be a very "personal" thing. It depends on so many factors. How valuable/irreplaceable is the data I am backing up?What sort of a mess will I have to sort out if I have to do a system reinstall? What is the real probability of my loosing data? How confident am I of the security of my system? What are the chances of losing the backed up data?My suggestion is to make a note of the data on a piece of paper and keep that piece of paper safe somewhere, just in case after you have entered it on your computer you have a happening. With the advent of much more accurate and varied information on the 'net coupled with faster retrieval it seems to me that a case could me made for to much attention to back up for the more mundane sort of thing. I tend to keep all my "valuables" on one partition and just back that up.That being said I am running Ubuntu behind a router firewall and I am not running a business, therefore doing a complete new OS installation is only a small nuisance rather than a disaster. -pops-
Wise words from catgate.I do a full system backup once a week on to an external hard drive (Friday afternoon, I've just done it) but I also use 2nd Copy which makes a backup of my Documents folder on to a separate hard drive every hour or so. I only do this on my "work" computer which contains valuable* documents and information.* Valuable to me, there is no intrinsic worth. andsome
I use Acronis now and then when I think about it. I always use it before doing anything big like trying out new software that I am not sure about.
