Dencandy Posted January 27, 2010 Report Share Posted January 27, 2010 Some of you might know that we've just had a presidential election here in Sri Lanka. The result isn't out at the time of posting but most people are expecting a very close finish as there are 2 very strong and able main candidates. Anyway, so far things have gone reasonably peacefully with a high turn out. For the first time in 25 years the people of the north are able to vote owing to the defeat of the vicious Tamil Tigers who would usually not allow voting in their "homeland".My worry is that if the final vote is close the 2 main candidates will accuse each other of cheating and take to the streets. Dencandy Posted February 4, 2010 Author Report Share Posted February 4, 2010 Yes, the election went off pretty fairly, there were certainly plenty of monitors around (including some from the EU & the Commonwealth). The former general isn't doing himself any favours by claiming the election was a fraud. Pity really because he had some good ideas.But at least the Tamil Tigers are no longer around to murder anyone who disagrees with them.Very pleasant in the mountains & I met some nice people from Norway at the meditation centre. They were complaining about the amount of snow this year - and that's in Norway, so I must have been bad.This Chilcot enquiry is amazing, isn't it. Whatever their final report says, now the public themselves have a much better idea of what really happened and it's what many of us suspected all along.No, the politicians don't have moats & belfreys in Sri Lanka. Instaed they have monopolies on certain essential products and armed bodyguards - but this is true all over Asia, not just here in Sri lanka. Whatever's going on here - and I certainly don't know - I get the feeling that most Sri Lankans are getting fed up with these silly political games and it's unlikely to lead to any largescale social unrest.
