andsome
No disrespect meant, but seriously I would have thought that churches with all their wealth could afford a few measly pounds for decent protection. I am happy to pay a few pounds a year for Eset Nod 32, on a pension.

Seshomaru Samma
If you have anyone who is proficient in Chinese , you can install 360safe from here :http://www.360.cn/ in addition to protecting you from viruses it also updates windows , can update application, and clean unnecessary files. Only install it from that address as there are a lot of viruses with a similar name.360safe are working together with ESET (=NOD32) in China, I find them trustworthy. I'll try it. Language is not a serious barrier in IT.it also updates windows , can update application, and clean unnecessary files. "...update windows" ? Sorry I don't follow. I update windows on MS website.Only install it from that address as there are a lot of viruses with a similar name.360safe are working together with ESET (=NOD32) in China, I find them trustworthy. Thanks for your warning. I'm running Windows on VM (guest) of Virtual Machine. I'll clone a Windows VM (guest) testing it. In the worst case I just delete the Window VM for this test. It won't affect the working Window VM.B.R.satimis
Seshomaru Samma
360safe updates windows for you. They get the updates from Microsoft and put them on their server. So if you just installed a new machine and want the latest updates you can use 360safe and save yourself a reboot for every update.

It'll take effect immediately after installation. I'm well aware that all Linux, *nix and *BSD systems have such effect. Reboot is NOT necessary after updating their software except kernel. The latter needs a reboot after update. TIAB.R.satimis

-pops-
I've been using MSE for some weeks after my previous software started playing silly games. I have it installed on four machines and find it perfectly satisfactory.I'm not a person who goes to the seemier side of the Internet (I'm sure you aren't either) so I don't know how MSE would cope with that. satimis
satimis ,Don't forget that anti virus is a part of computer security Check out this threadfor a comprehensive guide to protecting your computerHi Seshomaru,Thanks for your advice and link. It is a very interesting posting and very detail. This is the transition for my church. All PCs will migrate to Linux OS later. I never worry virus on running Linux and BSD workstations, almost non existing. Neither I worry too much on security while running Linux and BSD servers. There is no GUI. For server I build my own Linux OS, LinuxFromScratch and then Harden LinuxFromScratch. I run packet filtering on security, setting up very restrict rules on iptables. Even the invader can get in by chance after weeks of attempt he/she can't get out. Attack can't be made. Thanks again for your help.B.R.satimis
Seshomaru Samma
MSE is okay as well. To be honest, I don't think it matters that much. Throughout the years I have set many computers for people and companies and have found that when it comes to non tech savvy users the best solution is a locked down non admin account and disabling of IE (I'm sure some of you experts are running iE6 for years on clean systems but for those users who blindly click 'next' IE is not the best choice). I believe that a locked down system running an okay AV with no IE is preferable to an open system with IE and top notch AV. Just my 2 cents. As for migrating to Linux , I found that non tech savvy people have the greatest difficulties with Nautilus (or whatever file browser you change) and also some of the terminology on Open Office is different from Word which some people find confusing as well as small things like unmounting external devices and the likes. Personally I would choose Gnome , simplify the menus get ready to do a lot of supporting at the first few weeks.

Migration has already started running Ubuntu 10.04 which is quite user friendly. The users don't recognise the change. They only use browser and Open Office. Open Office are running on all PCs in the church. The file format of Word is still .doc so that other Windows users can read the file. Several PCs run both MS Office and Open Office simultaneously. Sooner or later MS Office will be deleted.B.R.satimis
