Cannot install printer driver

Recommended Posts

I have just purchased a Samsung laser printer, but I cannot install the driver. Everytime I run the installation cd it comes up with the message 'printer not found', check connections. I have checked in device manager, the printer is shown but in yellow because it says the driver has not been installed. When I try to install it from there, have disc etc. it says it cannot find the driver software even when pointed to the cd location..........help!

Printers (and scanners) must always be installed exactly as per instructions in the manual.

Did you connect the printer to the computer before being instructed to do so? If you did, this may mean that the computer is now unable to "see" the printer correctly. That's just one instance of what may have gone wrong.

Try doing a System Restore to a time before the printer was even in your premises and then follow the instructions exactly, ensuring you install the correct drivers for your operating system and do not connect the printer until told to do so.

Thanks for the reply, I did exactly as you said, still the same problems. Appart from the Installation wizard, I also get another pop up that says 'a problem occured during your hardware installation, the device may not work properly' still stumped!

I think I have tried everything I can think of, this really has me stumped.............any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,JohnKing.

You could try DriverMax:http://www.drivermax.com/

Free version lets you download two drivers a day.Make sure you keep it out of startup programs with System Configuration. It puts itself back in after installing updated drivers.

Keep us updated. :)

In the Manual for your printer, it does day that you can install the driver without the printer being connected. Perhaps that might be worth trying.

Below is a copy of the instruction according to the manual....

  1. note.png
If your machine is not connected to the computer, the following window will appear.

    common-03-error-usb.png

    • After connecting the machine, click Next.
    • If you don't want to connect the machine at this time, click the check box beside of Check if you want to install the software without connecting the printer to the network or locally.. In this case, the print a test page window will be skipped, and completes the installation.
    • The installation window in this User's Guide may differ depending on the machine and interface in use.

The searched machines will be shown on the screen. Select the one you wish to use and click Next.

note.png

If the driver searched only one machine, the confirmation window appears.<li> After the installation is finished, a window asking you to print a test page appears. If you want to print a test page, click Print a test page.

Otherwise, just click Next and skip to step 7.<li> If the test page prints out correctly, click Yes.

If not, click No to reprint it.<li> To register as a user of the machine in order to receive information from Samsung, click On-line Registration. You are now registered to the Samsung web site.

common-06.png

<li> Click Finish.

If the printer driver does not work properly, follow the steps below to repair or reinstall the driver.

  1. Make sure that the machine is connected to your machine and powered on.
  2. From the Start menu, select Programs or All Programs > Samsung Printers > your printer driver name > Maintenance.
  3. Select the option as you wish, follow the instruction on the window.

Thanks Irene, I tried that, but still the same problem. To answer your questions Alan, the connection is usb, I have tried a different port, and as far as the cable, I have not got a spare at the moment to try, but the printer is being recognised as new hardware and appearing in device manager, could there still be a cable problem if it is being recognised? My operating system is xp professional.

Further, Further to my last post, I have tried to install on a second machine as the acid test, it works perfectly! I am now completely out of ideas. It will not install on my other computer, the one I need to print from, same operating system. Ideas on how to sort this one out would be much appreciated.

I am as mystified as you - my best guess is that there is something wrong with the USB controller on the grumpy computer.

My colour laser printer will not work properly when plugged into a USB port on an extension card - it has to be plugged directly into a motherboard port.

Are you using a USB hub or extension card...?

Hi Alan, thanks for your reply. I am using a port on the back of the computer, one I had a printer connected to before.

Have you removed the driver completely with the printer unplugged, shut down and restarted the computer, reinstalled the software from the disk you had with the printer then plugged the printer in either when asked or at the end of the installation???

If the printer is listed in device manager with an exclamation mark or question mark, right click the printer and click Remove, then select Action from the top of the window and select Scan For Hardware Changes. This should 'find' the printer again and the drivers should be reloaded successfully.

If the printer is listed correctly, try selecting the printer properties (browse to the printer window, right click the printer and select Printing Preferences) and click the Ports tab. Ensure the port that is selected is USBPRN01.

Update: I have reinstalled the driver, this time with the printer unconnected (which the software allows you to do). The printer now appears in control panel/printers & faxes but in device manager is still yellow (error code 1 driver uninstalled). If I attempt to print, the printer is listed and all is well till I press print, then I get the error message 'the current printer port is not supported for the printer status'. As I said it installed on another machine fine, the only difference is that machine was on service pack 3, the machine I am trying to install on is service pack 2, could that make a difference? When I reboot the computer I get the New Hardware wizard each time.

It may well do just that. Why have you not updated your machine to SP3?
