New digital camera

Welcome back, hope that you had a great time. What camera is the new one?:)

It's a Canon EOS 50D (and it cost me an arm & a leg, so I'm a bit lop-sided at the moment - until new ones grow back).

I had the first ever EOS many years ago, it used film of course. It was an excellent camera, but the autofocus was painfully slow. I would love one of the later EOS range.:P

Buy yourself a Nikon andsome, they are bomb proof and take a superb photo. Not that there is anything wrong with Canon, I just prefer the Nikon. :D

Yes, I read the rave reviews for the latest Panasonic digital SLRs & I would have brought one IF Panasonic had service centres here in Sri Lanka. I was left with a choice between Canon & Nikon because at present they are the only ones with proper service & order centres here. I chose Canon because I had years of satisfaction with AE1s & A1s.

Now this will make you smile - when I got the EOS 50D I got stuck on the 2nd or 3rd thing you have to do to get the camers working, that is, but the battery pack in. I spent 20 minutes trying every possibility, but no matter what I did it was still too big for the battery compartment. It was just thinking I would have to take it back to the shop, when I realised I had to remove the close fitting cover on the back of the pack. What a relief when it fitted!!

Before the EOS I had an AE1 Program. Excellent camera in its day.

When I did national service in the R.A.F I was a photographer. When I was stationed in Germany we used a Rolleicord for general photos, and an M.P.P plate camera for speciality pictures. The Rollie was of course excellent, so was the M.P.P. except for the lenses, they could have doubled up nicely as coca cola bottle bottoms. Another job that we had was developing and printing air photos. One particular camera used had a focal length of thirty six inches. At the other end of the scale were 16mm cameras fitted to the gun sights of fighter aircraft, which operated when the guns were fired. Interesting stuff. Another job was checking the air cameras in each plane and signing the book to say that they were safely fitted and would not come adrift when the plane manoeuvred.B)

Amazing, in those days the skill was more in knowing & using the equipment in the best way at the time the photos were being taken.  With modern digital technology you can be less careful at the time & the skill comes now much more in  processing & adjusting the image on the computer.  The picture of the Oruva (Sri Lankan shrimp fishing boat) is actually a composite of 3 different ways of processing the same picture, then merging them using a technique called HDR, to get the best exposure for sky, boat and beach.
