CurlyWhirly
Perhaps all is not lost after all as after re-reading the mobo specs I can see that it has 4xSATA II slots.I can see them on my mobo and there is one free so all is not lost.I'll have to see if I have a spare SATA cable otherwise I'll have to buy one. CurlyWhirly
I have tried in PC World and they don't sell the SATA III 6Gbps Controller Card.I will have to order it online instead - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CC-004-SR&groupid=701&catid=49&subcat=Does anyone know what the connection on the controller card is as I don't recognise it and don't want to order it if it's not compatible with my motherboard. Also as I'm anxious to try it out does anyone know if I can install Windows 7 on the SSD drive now and then add the SATA III controller card when it arrives say next week ?Would there be any installation issues in doing this ?If so then I'll wait until the controller card arrives if it's compatible with my mobo.Cheers. CurlyWhirly
I'm stuck now The SSD drive shows in the BIOS and Windows Vista has installed the device drivers for it but it's not showing on the desktop so I can't format it.It's also showing in Device Manager.I was going to try and format it when installing Windows 7 on to it but the Windows 7 DVD just freezes when attempting to install Windows 7 on to it probably because it is unformatted ?!So what I'm trying to do is format it on Vista and then attempt the Windows 7 installation again.I used to know of an option where you could select a particular hard drive and right click the mouse on it and select format but I've forgotten how to get to it as I haven't used it for ages :( I'll keep searching through the various Vista options.p.s. by the way even though the SSD drive shows in Device Manager (below), there's no way to format it from there. CurlyWhirly
One thing I've realised is that my 2 hard drive monitoring utilities are telling porkies when it comes to the temperature of the SSD drive !
CurlyWhirly
p.s. I've taken the side panel off again and felt the SSD drive and it's definently not at 128 C !Anyway I've found out how to format the SSD drive, using the Computer Management > Devices option.I don't know how to format the drive though as it's different to what I've experienced before
CurlyWhirly
I've now found out how to initialise the drive but now I don't know which option to select:

"To boldly go where no man has gone before"AFAIK .... you don't need to align it - I think that the Windows 7 installer will do that for you Boris, you were right.I didn't select either of those options as I wasn't sure which one to choose !I don't know why but the Windows 7 installation worked the second time and I formatted my SSD drive whilst running the installation.Crikey I cannot believe how quick a SSD drive is :0 Bearing in mind that it's only running in SATA 2 mode (not SATA 3), the Windows 7 desktop takes only 8 seconds to load and when this is compared to the Vista installation which takes nearly 2 minutes !Without a doubt SSD drives are the future of computing.Being surprised as to how quick the SSD drive loads, I'm not bothered about not being able to fit a SATA 3 controller card although, of course, I would fit one if it was possible i.e. if my one and only PCIe x1 slot wasn't obscured by my graphics card Also, I've never run a dual-boot PC before and the amazing thing is I didn't have to do anything !When I boot the computer up, there are now 2 options for me to choose from (Windows 7 and Vista) and the selection that is highlighted is automatically loaded after a specific time limit - one minute I think recalling from memory.Success at last :Dp.s. despite the cost, I'm really glad I bought one now. D4\/!d
Crikey I cannot believe how quick a SSD drive is :0 p.s. despite the cost, I'm really glad I bought one now. Great news - I'm glad you are glad.I tend to find any new os installations are a bit quick to begin with. With time and various program installations they begin to slow down, altho you don't notice it coz it is so gradual.See, I am not a gamer - plus a quick boot is of no value to me. I'll watch your progress with interest.Pleased you got it all sorted.

CurlyWhirly
One thing I've realised is that my 2 hard drive monitoring utilities are telling porkies when it comes to the temperature of the SSD drive !I found out the reason.SSD's have no moving parts to generate heat and so don't even have temperature sensors. Therefore your application is falling back to a default value of 128 in confusion at the lack of a temperature sensor.Source: http://forums.crucial.com/t5/Solid-State-Drives-SSD/My-C300-128GB-runs-at-128c/m-p/14817p.s. I guessed that there was nothing wrong as I took off the side panel and touched the SSD drive and it was barely warm !
-pops-
The statement about moving parts is somewhat pointless. A CPU doesn't have moving parts but it is the component that requires the most intensive cooling.
