doug
Been uninstalling many of my used applications using the uninstalling facility in Control Panel. Just checked and note that I have 73 processes running (task manager/processes) Not sure if this is a lot but what would you recommend to do a good clean up of my system? AlanHo
Uninstall all the software you don’t ever use or have a known requirement for in the future.Do you have CCleaner installed on the computer. If not, download and install the free version./>http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/downloadThis is how I have my settings arranged :-Run CCleaner and the registry cleaner. You can take a backup of the registry before completing the clean up.(I have got so used to the reliability of CCleaner I no longer do this. Acronis would get me out of trouble if necessary)Now in CCleaner open Tools > Start Up and inspect all the programs you have got set to start up and run in the background every time you boot the computer. Be ruthless and disable all those you don’t really need. Don’t worry – you can always come back to re-enable an item you find later that you really needed. doug
Yes I do have Cc but it doesn't look look your layout will start digging. Daughter keeps forgetting to fire up the remote assist so I'm stuck on her PC so am amusing myself. No snow to shovel today so have been a bit bored! D4\/!d
My settings are very similar. There are a couple of notable exceptions.I have left Un-ticked the boxes for: Windows Explorer Run - I like my Run commands to be available in case of need; and Windows Regedit - for the same reason...I like to be reminded of previous commands. Also Task Bar Jump Lists remains un-ticked.You prefer Adobe [yuk] over a pdf reader such as Foxit Reader?http://www.foxitsoft...ure_PDF_Reader/Umm, have you still got Java installed? Boris
IMHO you can definitely disable all those I have marked in red below. You can also disable the Spigot stuff (unless you actually require it)"Spigot searchsettings.exe's purpose is to check periodically your default search engine and restore it to Yahoo in case you agreed to set it to Yahoo in the first place and another application is trying to change it"Similarly, you can disable InCD unless you need it specifically"InCD allows optical discs to be used in a similar manner to a floppy disk. The user can drag and drop files to and from the disk using Windows Explorer, or open and save files on the disk directly from application programs " - usually with re-writable CDs
doug
Gee thanks one and all. Lots of issues for me to tackle there. Boris yes I've disabled those 4 and also carried on uninstalling progs I haven't used for years. Now down to 57 processes running, according to Task manager but I only count 16 under the processes tab. Puzzling. Anyway things do seem to be somewhat crisper. Having got the Acronis 2013 Family pack installed with the backups I'll be a bit more vigorous. Will follow through on this on another thread.Couple of furthe points for me to ponder re Java and foxit reader. Will ask further about pro's and cons for them. Alan2273
Doug, have you checked all the other start up headings that come after Windows, Internet Explorer, Scheduled tasks etc.
doug
Er no! I only know about the ones I listed from Ccleaner
Alan2273
When you go to the start up section, the first screen gives you all the items that run in Windows at start up.There are another 3 headings that you can disable or delete. As you can see I have very few tasks running at start up as when you run a program it will generally ask you if you want to update. You will find quite a lot of tasks run under the other three headings, that is where your other running processes are that you cannot find. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
In addition to the startup processes that Boris marked earlier, you can also safely disable Reader_sl.exe and jusched.exeBoth will come back enabled when you install new versions of Adobe Reader and Java RTE.
