poppy1910 Posted October 21, 2003 Report Share Posted October 21, 2003 yes im going to do it!! ive got my xp pro disc sitting here ready to be put in! im ssssssoooooooooooo nervous cos im so un-pc literate. but im gonna do my best lol. im on windows me at the mo, 56k dialup. any last minute tips, suggestions or panic stoppers????? im hoping to do the upgrade thing instead of the instal from clean hard drive. ive put the files i cant bear to lose on discs just incase! anything else i should do?? anyone willing to swing by and do it for me, is very welcome lol. just please wish me luck lol. if i do screw it up utterly, then its a pleasure knowing you all! lol. mikef Posted October 21, 2003 Report Share Posted October 21, 2003 As long as you have the correct XP drivers installed for your modem it should be fine, I upgraded on my old computer and it went fine except I forgot to do the modem drivers first which I had to get someone else to download for me onto disc. If your modem is OK XP will go on line to automatically download any other XP drivers needed.It is a long job though so give yourself a good couple of hours to do the job. Run this proggy and save all your drivers just incase something doesn't go right and you have to put ME back onhttp://www.windowsforum.org/support/forum/...?showtopic=3070make yourself a folder somewhere call it..saves or something like that then:go to your C drive, find your favourites folder, copy it and paste it into your save folder.open up outlook express and export your address book to your save folderany programs you have downloaded then put them in your save folderplus all your personal documents etc. once you are sure you have everything then burn it all to disk including the folder with all your back up drivers inGood luck babe!!! Well it has to be for me. :unsure: You will of course have one major drawback. It's so bloody boring. If it is set up right you will have no bsod, no fatal exceptions, just windows running as smooth as silk. :( So sit back, pop the disk in and relax. It may be worthwhile asking around to see if any of your friends have XP updates and SP1 on disk.... mag cover disks maybe. Anything that can save you some download time on your dial up. At some point it needs its hand holding and you have to give it some information about who you are and where you are so it can set up the correct keyboard layout and stuff like that.As well as saving your current drivers, check on the relevant website for XP updates and anything you have to be careful of with XP for all your hardware.When you're reloading programs, obviously do your firewall and A/V first but afterwards, don't put everything else in straightaway. Put your most used or most vital programs in first, two at the most, and run them in for a day or two. Then install one or two more and so on. If you put them all on at once there is a possibility that a conflict, never seen before, could appear and if everything is installed you will have difficulty sorting out what is which.After saying all that, it really is easy and very satisfying when it's done :) Don't forget to arrange the BIOS to boot from CD.Brian Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
