Car bursts into flames after driver puts petrol in the wrong hole

 

 

I was confused, what "wrong hole" could she have used, so I looked at pictures of a smart car of suitable vintage, there are really only two options. The petrol flap on the right hand side of the car which looks like, well as you'd expect a petrol flap, lift cover to reveal filler pipe as you'd get on every liquid fueled car diesel or petrol ever built. On the left hand side of the car there's an air inlet for the rear mounted engine. It's narrow and triangular despite the wording of the article not designed to be removed and to my eyes at least totally unlike a fuel cap in every conceivable way.

Words fail me. The woman got perilously close to a Darwin award. Very very lucky.

She could be one of those special ones.  There are still one or two in circulation, usually detectable by the funny purple ring in the eye.

Have to issue a partial apology to the lady in question, on the 2005 model Smart the air inlet was round and the same size as the petrol cap, not triangular as on later models. In fact the change of design in the body panel from a round hole mirroring the fuel cap to a triangular form makes me wonder if she was perhaps not the first person to make this mistake ?
