Many years back, way beyond when you drove through, they had even more basic practices in many fields of endeavour. Not only in Le Mans but in many other places. In one German Gasthof (where we stayed a couple of nights about 20 years ago) a young lad of the village was paid one Pfennig, by the landlady, for every fly he could "swat".
