A few years back we were sitting in a departure lounge at either Lanzarote or Tenerife airport (can't recall which0 with our Monarch plane right in front of us having the luggage loaded.  We were due to board shortly.

I could see the captain taking a tour of the outside of the aircraft doing his pre-flight inspection when he paused at the right hand engine. He was waving at someone and a couple of minutes later two guys appeared with a ladder and put it against the engine. The captain climbed up and was clearly inspecting the front intake cowl and tugging at it. He was shouting down to the guys and one of them ran from view and re-appeared with something in his hand. The captain stepped off the ladder and the guy in overalls stepped on and proceeded to attach gaffer tape around the joint between the engine cowl and the engine body. My wife was aghast. I phoned my son who is a BA Captain and told him the tale - he assured me it was standard practice - the cowl clips had worked loose and the taped joint was perfectly safe. They would be entering the problem in the aircraft log and a repair had to be done when the plane got back to the UK.

Duly placated, my wife though still worried, agreed to board. As fate would have it we were sitting on the right of the plane and she had a window seat - right opposite the engine.  She normally sleeps on a flight - but on that one didn't take her eyes off the taped joint for the duration.
