Student unions have a long history of attracting the left wing loony contingent, most students go to study and have no time for them. Back in the day when I was a student at what was then Sheffield polytech there was a bus strike and many of us lived on an estate four miles outside the city. Being impecunious students taxis were not an option so we walked in. Not best pleased to discover that the student union had declared a lock down in support of the busses and the whole campus was shut down. To say we were pissed off was the understatement of the year. This was followed quite quickly by a special student union meeting to discuss the issue, possibly the only time ever when most students attended, so many turned up they had to reconvene in the carpark. One lefty arsewipe decided to propose a point of order to invalidate the meeting as it was pretty clear what was going to happen to his beloved political protest. the crowd made a noise that can best be described a a low snarl at this point the president intervened, correctly having assumed that the usual Union blathering would result in the whole lot of them being tarred feather and tied to a lamp post.  Not surprisingly the lock down ended there and then and soon after so did the only Union meeting that most of us ever bothered to attend.
