Resolved - My Xmas wish list

As the fun season approaches I've been dropping hints to family that for Christmas I would appreciate my presents to be money to... i.e. I can put it all together and go for somat or other.

Been thinking about upgrading my hardware now XP Pro is up and running and my concern regarding my old scanner is no longer an issue. My basic system is as follows:-

Elite K7S5A mobo ver 3.1

AMD Duron 800 Mhz

256 M SDR Ram

Been thinking about an AMD Athlon CPU and 512 M DDR Ram. The mobo supports 266 fsb. If I'm limited to which item to concentrate on should I go for memory first ~£50 or an AMD Athlon XP 2400 ~£63. I can always an another 512 M memory module later. Proposing to hang on to the mobo.

Have started to do some digging. The mobo manual says version 3.1a but belarc Advisor says the mobo is ECS K7S5A 1.0. Also, The Duron is listed as just Duron 800. Do I just slam in some DDR ram or how can I find what the mobo will take, provided the cpu can stand it ready for an AMD XP cpu later.

here is the spec sheet for your mobo. It can take either DDR or SDR memory, a duron or athlon chip.

it could take 2 memory modules, so multiply the highest module capacity by two and there is your maximum memory!!

i think that you will see more of a system improvement with more memory than a faster cpu at this time......

here is the memory page at crucial that details all the sort of memory available for your mobo in sizes and types.

your mobo can take all of the types however you will only see a benefit from the pc2100 modules as your mobo only has a mem speed of 266.......

Thank you very much. That has saved me a lot of searching and head aches. At £50 I'm already half way there from my Daddy's day pressy. :D

I think a resolved chitty is now due. When I consider the cpu I'll start another thread.

PS. are we still doing resolved chitties. Haven't noticed them lately.

Just a quick point.

You can only install a CPU upto 1400Mhz on that version of the mobo Ver 1.0 i am not sure if a bios update will im prove this.

If it is a ver 3.1 mobo then that will take upto 2400XP i think.

The ver 3.1 came out in july 2002.

One way to check for sure, is to look at the version number stamped on the board at the bottom left corner.

Good luck

Tony
