doug Posted December 25, 2003 Report Share Posted December 25, 2003 I attach a picture of the wife on her new trike. It's an electric powered front wheel - a 20 in BMX. As you can see it fits into her existing wheel chair. So I went out foe a short jog up onto the cycle track. Then turned down the other side of the Washington Highway to explore a different route back. Amazed to be told that I had been cracking along at 8.4 mph and that was before the christmas lunch. We'll have to do some experimenting because when we came to some steep bits she finished up sliding back down on the slippery leaves - British Rail leaves. Quite funny looking down seeing her going back wards with the front wheel spinning like mad. Good fun though, a round trip pf only 5.5 miles. Hope it's worth it!We've got a large piece of a dead pig to eat. Just gone into the oven ready to eat at about 6 o'clock.All the family is here (eight of us) including son in law whose flight was delayed because of all the extra security checking and sobriety testing that is now taking place (he's a pilot).As a sometimes user of a wheelchair, I'm very taken with the powered wheel device, doug. doug Posted December 25, 2003 Author Report Share Posted December 25, 2003 When I was running the battery in I had it up to 20 mph going down hill - freewheeling. I gather, from the users website, that the record is 54 mph down hill.The big advantage of this one is the stability. As you can see it has the full width of the wheelchair at the back and the single wheel out front. Feels great going over rough ground - although the wife suffers with the nerves at the base of her spine, hence the green gel cushion.The other one is an electric buggy very narrow wheel base. She can turn it within it's own length. She can really DO M & S now. The big thing with both chairs is the shear sense of freedom they bring. I think that, psychologically, to be in a wheel chair unless have the strength to propel your self must be like being in prison. Totally dependent on others.
