Chris
An e-mail would contain a code for a particular scent You could soon be able to spice up your e-mails with your favourite perfume. UK net provider Telewest Broadband is testing a system to let people to send aromatic e-mails over the internet. It has developed a kind of hi-tech air freshener that plugs into a PC and sprays a smell linked to the message.More | Here

-pops-
I remember a development in the 60's (or was it 50's?) which came to be known as smellivision where aromas were injected into the air circulations systems in cinemas, the smell changing with each change of scene. Fine for just one smell but going from, say, the pine forest to the diner with its smells of coffee, apple pie, burgers and so on to the gas station to the wherever, the air circulators couldn't change the air fast enough and the overwhelming fragrance in the cinema often became nauseating - so much so that people began vomiting - making the overall smell even worse. There was another invention in the early 80's as well where an air freshener fragrance was generated on playing a disk resembling a vinyl record. It was called aroma disk and had several different smells on the same record. Again, the odours became intermingled and had just the opposite effect to that intended.Another daft invention, I fear. (I do write with some knowledge about this having spent 30+ years a a chemist in the fragance industry.)
