It will rewrite with no input from you.

With Linux installed you have LILO as the bootloader that fancy image you've posted.

When you rewrite the MBR you delete LILO.

Windows cannot recognise Linux so it will only rewrite it for Windows meaning you cannot boot into Linux.

You can create a boot floppy for Linux.

Any messages?

Go back into the recovery console, but this time type:

fixboot

Press Y and enter.

and the bootsector will be redone.

Restart and see if she boots.

If not go back to the recover console and type:

bootcfg /rebuild

[space after bootcfg]

Now allow it to finish scanning...

You should now see:

[1]: C:\WINDOWS

ADD instalation to boot list: Press Y and enter.

Enter Load Identifer: Type: Pilch and press enter.

Enter OS Load Options: Type: /Fastdetect and press enter.

Now restart...

If it has worked then you will see two options to boot from when starting the computer.

Choose "pilch"

Now in XP go to Start, Control Panel, System, Settings [third], Click "EDIT",

Delete the line:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Rename between the quotes, the line that has pilch in it to "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition".

Exit and save.

Reboot and that should do it.

If the above does not work try a How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP

You'll have to install SP1 any additional updates, but it will keep your own files intact.

As both os's are not bootable then something went disastrously wrong :(

If you have your backups...Format the entire drive Andy.

Just Install Linux on it's own...see it it all works....

You'll have to then delete linux and put back XP on it. Boot into windows...and STOP!

Don't even install anything just make sure you can get into Windows.

Now install Linux...

Don't give up it's a learning curve.

I think the problem that i had was to the fact that it deleted my windows Partition. What i may try again in a bit is to create a partition that i can format with linux and thus then try again.. although that wont be till monday as i am away...

Ah, yes that would be a problem.

Umm...Do you remember what you did when it came to the partitoning and using redhat as well?

If you start with a bare hard drive, install Windows but leave some "free space".

When you go to partition from redhat choose the option: Keep all partitions and use exisitng free space.

The image below is from fedora core 1 but the install is the same [give or take] as redhat.

is there any programmes that can slpit a 3 gb backup file into several cd-r?

Just incase you missed that^

Right soo..im going to redownload all the images...one at a time

Im going to burn them at a low speed....24x or somthing?

Im going to use "partition commander" to formate my entire drive....

Im goin to install linux.....See if it works...and also see if it installs off alll three disks rather than only needing one disk....

Quote from me

when i was installing linux....when it asked me to chanhe to CD2 and the drawer poped out when i put cd2 in and closed the drawer it just poped out again and asked for CD2 again.....over and over again

So eventualy i just hit cancel like you said to do if it asked for a cd you didnt have....

same with CD 3

YOu must have missed it

so when ive got it working and preferably installing of all three disks...

Then I reformate my entire drive once again and install Windows....

If i can then go ahead and install linux on a 15 GB partition.....

Then the moment of truth...reboot and try to boot into linux....if that works...which i think it might....

then reboot and try windows....if it works GREAT :D

but if it dosent and i get the flashing underslash

I put in the XP cd and use the recovery consol and type "fixmbr"

Then if this doesnt work as it didnt last night....

Do i do this?

I've got Linux installed now, no problems. I configured the boot loader during setup to default windows after 10 seconds. I got online while I was in Linux as well, but not much time to do anything tonight, so I'll have another go tomorrow. :D :) B) :wohoo:
