-pops-
The costermongers of the East End of London developed a complete language using synonyms, euphemisms and part rhymes. It's called Cockney Rhyming slang. Some examples of it are given by Sparks (above). There are thousand of other examples, many unknown outside of their immediate usership. nellie2
 Oh don't remind me..... that happened once when I was about 10 and had gone to the veg shop for some potatoes for my mum...... I was mortified. Luckily I had a fairly long dress on (it went past the knees) and hobbled home with my knees clamped tightly together so they couldn't slither any further!!!!
Guest northamuk
peter e, I think the West of Scotland equivalent of plimies was 'saunies' as in sandshoes.

peter e
Yes, popeye. I remember them being called "pumps", too. Can't say I've heard the term "saunies" before, Northy. Strange how gym shoes have developed into very expensive "trainers" - cos that's all trainers are really, aren't they?

Drilling on the side method!!Believe me, we got Danced all over the place!!
