I chose maxtor cause its what i have....ive never had any problems....although im not sure if the brand of hard drive makes a difference but it seems a little noisy when it being used...and that through a steel case :o

In recent times I've had 2 dead Seagates, 1 dead Maxtor, 1 dead Samsung ....... and so some 10 months back, on a whim, I tried out an Excelstor 60 gig ATA100.

I have now fitted over a dozen of these in various machines that I've built/upgraded and have yet to experience a problem. They are very reasonably priced, run cool, are quiet, acceptably fast and have a 3 year warranty.

I firmly believe that they are the most reliable of current makes available.

At the minute I'm using a 160 gig Samsung and a 80 gig Maxtor. The Maxtor is a replacement for the original one that died after 3 weeks :(

I've had another Samsung that was making horrible noises (so replaced that one).

Also had a IBM Deskstar that konked out too :rolleyes:

Had a Seagate in the PC before this and never had any trouble with it, nice and quiet too.

If I had to make a choice I suppose it would be either Seagate or Samsung as they are nice and quiet

The only ones that I've had a problem with have been the Fujusti bacth that there was a known problem with. Worked for a company who had over 90 replaced. The replacements were Maxtor ones...that happend to be made by Fujutsi.

Any problems that occur seem to be more to do with one batch of drives -eg the IBM Dekstar 120gb ones rather than one single manufacturer.

If I had to make a choice, I'd look at cost, do a quick scan around the web to see if I could find any horror stories and buy the drive. Warranty is the most likey thing that would sway me.

I've owned a few HDD's over the years and the only problems I've had was with a Fujitsu from the bad batch Sir Radfordin mentioned :o

I use Maxtors now and they seem fine :D

My Maxtor DiamondPlus 9 was also "whisper quiet"

for about a week ! :o

and then it became like a flock of woodpeckers tapping away together on a piece of hardwood

finally progressing to a rattling box of ball-bearings

until it finally gave up the ghost ! :(

Not even a SMART warning !
