I wouldn't be surprised in the least that far, far worse things are uttered by, well, anyone connected with the media, politics, indeed anything connected with public life. I have expeienced at first hand the views of certain ex-cabinet minister on his opinions of the people that vote them into the position they hold - I have commented here on that. I have no doubt whatsoever that the majority of "celebrities" are of a similar attitude. They quickly forget who got them into the position they hold either in some way by paying their salary or through the ballot box.A pox on the lot of them (that is a seventeenth century term of derision). This includes people like politicians, but also people who are well known for no apparent reason. I'm afraid that it's all part of the dumbing down process. We all have different tastes, and I appreciate that. I just cannot understand however how anyone can take any interest in SO CALLED celebrities, or programmes like that. It's the same with the excess number ff soap opera's on television now, as soon as a trailer for one of these programmes comes on, all that seem to happen is that they stand there mouthing off at each other, what on earth is the attraction in that? Where in the rules of the game does it lay out how you go about EARNING a penalty? I was under the impression that the referee awarded penalties for infringements of the rules of the game. Sir Radfordin Posted May 3, 2004 Report Share Posted May 3, 2004 I would tend you agree with your there andsome, but there are instances when a player will never be able to get a shot on target and so they keep the pressue on the defence until someone makes a mistake.This is much more obvious in rugby - if the forwards keep the ball coming and keep presure on the line then eventually one team will make a mistake and a penalty will be awarded. That is were it is a tactical game, it is bascially a forced error.However footballers are too quick to claim foul play and so the ref is left with a very hard job. It all players were more willing and able to play by the rules when a geniuine ingringment of the rules happens I'm sure the ref would be in a much better position to act. Haven't checked to see if it can be done with the snooker. Have to say having done it for rugby in the past I find it much harder to follow the game! People justifiably condemning the man because he is a great talentless moron (just like all the other talentless "all round entertainers" ...failed singists, dancists, actists, politicists etc that eternally fill the screens), and yet others condemning the man on grounds of PC. I have no time for the man, he is just another workshy carpet bagger in the mould of all our celebrities. However the restrictions abitrarily placed on free speech under the guise of PC are iniquitous and should be expunged ASAP. The only reason for PC is to give more power to the politicians by trying to ensure that people are prevented from saying what they really feel, and also making light of problems by joking about them (be they infirmity, politicians, illegal imigrants or the traditional "there was an Englishmen an Irishman and a Scotsman"). If anyone studies the anatomy of humor eventually they realise that someone has to trip over the banana skin before the 'laugh' point is reached. It is the juxtaposition of the sombre and serious next to the ludicrous that causes the brain to "trip". I am sorry, I did not make my contribution clear. My reference to joking was not directed at the 'Big Ron' incident, but at PC generally. The use of obscene language in any form of broadcast warrants severe action, but in my opinion the use of language steeped in traditional comedy is not offensive when used as comedy. It was also sawn down the middle and both halves could be separated to a distance of ten feet, whereby the chain that linked them together came into play. That struck me as hilariously funny , in the early sixties, but it's just struck me that it's likely that a lot of miserable buggers didn't think it was.
