Nothing to blame James for mate.. That was the most ill advised backpass i've seen in a long time, James did the only thing he could.

England is becomming a team known for choking.. and I can see where they have done so this time especially... They had the game in their grasp! :(

Absolutely!!!

It always looked like France was going to get at least one goal though - at least in the second half.

Damn!! :(

Very enjoyable first half, and either team could have led, very even, first one way then the other. In the second half England were quite abysmal. They just don't seem to have the killer instinct necessary to sew a game up. To my way of thinking they just literally threw it. I don't have a lot of time for the French as a nation, but their victory was well deserved. It's no good blaming individual players for a mistake, as a team they were awful in the second half. It is also pointless to blame substitutions. The manager is damned if he makes a particular substitution, and also damned if he doesn't. They are ALL grossly overpaid for kicking a ball around, and are ALL supposed to be international material, so therefore they should ALL be capable of a good performance when called upon.

Just to round up, I really wish these know all commentators would stop referring to this or that player having EARNED a penalty or a free kick. When I did a few seasons refereeing when I was a lot younger, I used to AWARD a penalty or free kick for an infringement of the rules. Unless the rules have changed somewhere along the way, free kicks and penalties are not there to be earned.

Bring back the rugby...please.

The football was as dirty as ever again last night with more comments like "earning/winning a penalty".

I've seen more exciting advert breaks...!

:P

In all honesty, Mate, I don't think England is up to a return Match with the Aussies!

What that a disaster that would be, if we flogged ya?

Another 35 years?

 :D

Pardon me, but the only player requiring substituting was Scholes. The French had his measure, were concentrating on him and he already had a card. Owen didn't show much because he was tied up by two defenders. Taking him off released one. Heskey, who should not be in the squad at all, undid all of the excellent English defensive work by giving away the fatal free-kick on the edge of the English box, not only on the edge, but central. Rooney had plenty left in him and hadn't been carded. He'd have dug even deeper after Beckham missed the penalty that he had earned fairly by hard work and supression of his bad temper . The point of blaming the substitutions is that they cost England the game. They weakened the team and pressured Gerrard into an error.

The French were brilliant in the second half but England were even better in the first. They did enough to win it in the second. Sven struck 'em a mortal blow.

Pointless indeed. :D I was watching the game, andsome. :D

When the substitute Emile Heskey clumsily brought down Claude Makelele, Zidane swerved home a superb free-kick. Then, with woe rampant in England ranks, Steven Gerrard, under pressure, half-hit a pass back and David James brought down Thierry Henry.

PS. If Beckham had put away the penalty my forecast would have been correct. I don't fancy forecasting the next one though. Trouble in t'camp, I reckon.

As I have already pointed out, there is no way that the rules of football allow anyone to EARN a free kick or penalty. These are awarded by the referee, for a transgression of the rules of the game.

Got to disagree again. Rooney 'earned' his penalty by means of speed and a skilfull run into the box that could only be stopped by means of foul play. Speed and skill are within the rules. He employed them and a penalty was his just reward.

Of course, I agree with you that 'earning' can mean cheating and I think that a Frenchie got a card for diving. Or was that a Croation ? Hard to remember, there's a lot of it about. :)

It says little for the state of football if you really believe what you are saying. If speed and skill can only be stopped by such a foul, then it is about time that this type of behaviour was rewarded with an automatic sending off. I still say that he could NOT have earned the penalty. I doubt if any forward will start a run with the ball with the deliberate intention of EARNING A PENALTY, he will do it in the hope of EARNING a goal.

Sure, but if some mug brings him down he might earn a penalty instead. If I were still a manager and I knew that a defender was a clumsy chappie I'd instruct my most nimble forward to run at him in the hope of earning a penalty. Nowt wrong with that. That's just exploiting the opposition weaknesses. Them's the rules. :)

You seriously think that a manager would ask a valuable forward to risk breaking a leg by doing something silly to EARN a penalty? I still say that the expression is wrong, and that penalties are AWARDED by the referee.

Fine by me, as long as my team gets more goals than the other lot. :D
