A fourteen year old lad was camping in his back garden with his friends, and got killed by a lightning strike. We had some exceptionally heavy rain in the general South Staffordshire area last night at about 6-30PM. We have always had freak storms from time to time for as long as I can remember, but they are DEFINITELY occurring more and more often, and are heavier than normal. I never saw a drop bad news ....I posted a good news story a while back about salmon and trout re appearing in Wandsworth beck ( A Thames tributary ) ..apparently all the fishhave been all been killed of due to sewer overflow (raw) into the Thames.The victorian design was not built to handle flash runoff ........over flow is direct into the river .....Due to eutrophication (sp?) (oxygen depletion in water as a consquence of raw sewage nitrates in bulk into " clean" ish water =explosive algal growth ) everything east of Stains in the Thames is expected to die ......! Hot weather as well ..... If you go to central london during this hot spell ...take a clothes peg .....and dont splash in any puddles .... D4\/!d Posted August 4, 2004 Report Share Posted August 4, 2004 It seems that none of you were at the Great British Beer Festival at Olympia, London. Why not? Anyway I was. At about 15.00 I was on the publicity balcony. There was the loudest crack of lightening anyone had ever heard. It forked right accross the sky. It seemed as though it was just four feet from my toes. I'm convinced it just missed my b@lls. A few folk saw the lightening flash it's way down along the length of the side corridor of the grand hall. Latter the storm returned and the rain cascaded down the glass roof way above our heads. It was like standing under a waterfall. The rain sounded like a round of applause for an encore - it went on and on and on. There was a game of table football in progress. And the rain was coming in over their heads. So lifelike. Nobody has enjoyed a game of table fooball in the rain so much.Cheers, I'm now off to enjoy a glass of Hop Back Summer Lightening.Maybe I'll see you at GBBF Bar D later this week. Enjoy your ale. Tankus Posted August 4, 2004 Report Share Posted August 4, 2004 Ah no ....I chow down at the Lahore (Pakistani ) of commercial street nr brick lane occasionally with my Muslim mates , but they don't drink ..so its not a pub job ...., my usual watering hole is the Nags in Walthamstow , The drum , in Bakers Arms (tops for kegs) and the college on Forest road .(Walthamsow) ........ a bit further east .....Watering hole's in the city include Dirty Dicks opp Liverpool St stn ( fond student memories as all my exams were done at the Bishops-gate Institute .......)West end ....Tattashal Castle (embankment )and the Round Table (off Charring Cross road Nr Leicester Sq ..they sometimes have theakstons old peculiar on tap ...(drink upstairs away from the tourists on a culture thang ...... ) Best for pride and Youngs ...The Spread Eagle at Wandsworth ...opp Youngs brewery...... grim_reefer Posted August 5, 2004 Report Share Posted August 5, 2004 four girls were struck in Hyde Park aswell as a boy in Birmingham you knownever noticed there was three pages to the thread.. pictures already been shown. when i saw it on the news Acton and parts of west london looked like the flash floods in some parts of the world with gushing rivers. deep enough to have double deckers with the bottom level nearly underwater.. :blink: Not A Single Signficant Drop fell over here near east london!!last year it was the same though i remember (or was it in winter) there was parts near here flooded badly coz a lot of areas used to be flood plains and marshland, the bits that are built on were underwaterand i know our drainage sewers wernt built to take this much rain on top of our sewage! I played safe and shut this machine down and disconnected the phone line to the modem just in case. It's moved away to wards the Northwest now so thing's have quietened down for the time being.
