An engineer once told me that there were 1000 thous in an inch. Well that is just plain rubbish. There isn't space in an inch for so many, unless they were extremely small. And any way, how would they get them all to fit in, and how do they ensure that there is exactly 1000 of them in every inch. There may be some inches with 900ish fat thous and other inches with 1100ish thin thous( or any reasonably near number). My last job in a toolroom was as an optical profile grinder, making form tools to be used mainly in the motor trade. Many tools that I made had to be finished to an accuracy of plus or minus one ten thousandth part of an inch on the basic dimension. All the time that I was grinding a given area, I was viewing it through a microscope at fifty to one times size, and following the form to view it by moving a pantograph arm on a layout drawing at fifty to one times full size. Regarding thousands of an inch, it is quite easy for an experienced toolmaker to measure something with a steel rule to an accuracy of within plus or minus ten X one thousandths of an inch. Much of my work was done using a microscope or eye piece similar to those used by jewellers. They had to have bell shaped entrances and exits to the hole which also had to be at just the right angle etc... All of this was done with hand crafted needles that were ground on a small wheel and then fixed to a machine that sent ultrsonic pulses through the needle and with the aid of varying grades of diamond powder and oil, would bore through the diamond. Took about 5 to 6 hourse per diamond and we needed to make sets of between 14 and 21 for each wire drawing machine. Each diamonds hole had to be finished to the precise size required as well as having a highly polished surface. I hate to think how many diamonds I had to bin whilst learning the trade :whistling: There were only about 12 of us in the country that could do the job at the time :) As for using a steel rule for such delicate measuring....I preferred my micrometer :) Blimey, that post took me back a few years :) haven't thought about that job for donkeys ages B) http://www.wiredie.com/natural.htm Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was just making the point that ten thousandths of an inch is quite visible, and CAN easily be seen on a good quality steel rule. Your work must have been very interesting, as was mine, but very challenging. At the time I was very well paid. I left a job at 7/3d per hour, to move to a competitor at 10/- shillings per hour. By the time I left to take a job as a representative, there was on tool and cutter grinder and myself earning 13/3d per hour, whilst the others were earning 10/- shillings per hour, so we must have been valued by the company.
