Hi all

I know this question has been asked a thousand times before, so i say sorry now.

I am planning on buying my 7 year old son a games console for his birthday and Xmas (they are only 5 days apart) and what i want to know is what do you all think will be the most suitable for him,

This is what i know about them (which isn't a lot)

PS2

1) A good solid machine with plenty of support for it.

2) Backward compatibility with PS1 games i think (which means his pocket money will go a lot further, cos he can also buy PS1 games which are quite cheap now.

3) DVD Player

4) About € 150 new from a shop over here in Germany.

Xbox

1) A good solid machine with plenty of support for it.

2) DVD Player

3) About € 150 new from a shop over here in Germany.

4) Does not need memory cards as it has a built in Hdd

Game Cube

1) A good solid machine (don't know about the support for it, but i guess that it is pretty good)

2) DVD Player ? I think

3) About € 90 new from a shop over here in Germany.

Now my boy is a mad fan of racing games from Mario Cart through to Need for speed underground, so the console must have good racing games available for it.

Forget about my other question on the Games board about backing up the games, as they all seem just as hard to do as each other, so he will just have to be careful with the disks.

Thanks for any advice on this subject.

Tony

hi tony

i'm not a games player but was looking myself earlier in the year

for my 11yr old grandaughter.

i personally thought the games for the x box to violent and a lot are rated 18

the cube is not well supported and a lot of firms dropped it.

best bet is the ps2 well supported with loads of good games for kids.

I own PS2 and XBOX. Here's the facts.

My PS2 has broken 2 times, once 3 years after I got it, and once again 6 months after I got the replacement. Both fixes were free. But with 500+ games (including ps1) you won't be short of games he can play.

I've had XBOX for a few months. I can't get away from it. 'nuff said, though it's not really geared towards kids.

Gamecube will only play gamecube games (no dvd the other 2 do, but xbox requires an accessory) it is very geared towards younger generation with games like Mario and Zelda, etc. as well as some games for the older ones like Resident Evil.

Bottom line, your best deal would be PS2, I'd recomend XBOX, and you should get Gamecube for a younger child, but he may grow out of it. Get PS2. :D

Well I'm gonna go out on my own and say a Gamecube, not just because I have one, but because they are excellent machines. They more than match the PS2 in terms of power and graphical capabilities, but also because they a geared towards the younger generation.

They have LOTS of games for kids, including all the Mario series, aswell as other titles aimed towards older teens, such as Resident Evil et al.

My nephew loves the Gamecube, plus they're a lot cheaper than the other machines which is always a bonus!

BTW the GC has all the Need for Speed series of games available for it as well as a host of accessories.

The myth that there aren't a lot of games for it is not true, there are thousands, maybe not as many as released on the PS2, but more than enough to keep anyone happy!

PS2 its cheap and cheerfull with hundreds of available games a thrivng "used" games market for cheap pocket money games. I agrea that gamecube has some top kids titles "mario sunshine, mariokart, metroid" etc but the actual games are still exspensive imo.

Thanks for your replies, & to the people that voted.

I am leaning more to the PS2 at the moment, the main reason is because of the back wards compatibility with PS 1 games. And i have also been checking out the 2nd hand prices for the games on ebay, and they are quite cheap, also a couple of his freinds have a PS2 already, so he can swap games with them if he wants (as long as they come back).

I will let you know what i go for.

Cheers all

Tony

I have heard the game cube is klass. You have to get your 7 yr old the four top games :P gran turismo 3 aspec gran turismo 4 (if it ever comes out) and gta3 gta vice city and gtasan andreas :P only messin. Game cube is geared towards younger players. But the best console i have ever had and had the most fun out of was the nintendo 64. Mario zelda goldeneye and that bear with the bird :) banjo and kazooe

My son has both PS2 and Gamecube. He is 9 and has has PS2 since he was 6. I think PS2 is better than the others because of the amount of games available and the lower priced PS1 games. It could be helpful to know what type of games he likes as well (RPG, Racing, etc.)

Dont think you could really make a mistake though. He will love any of them.

Hi

I did mention what type of games he likes in my first post ;)

At the moment he is playing with N64, he just love Mario cart and Beatle Adventure Racing, but also loves Need for speed Underground and Race Driver.

(TOCA) on the PC

He also has Lego Island 2 & Toystory 2 Games for the PC but since getting into the racing games he has not played them much.

Thanks all

Tony

Today is his birthday, and for the last one and half hours he has been playing need for speed underground 2, he has got 3 games with the game cube today and a few more coming on xmas, but lets just say that he seems to be quite happy with the game cube.

Thanks all for the advice given, my boy is a very happy 7 year old.
