  1. 1. Should more courtesy be extended to members ?

    • Actions by Moderators should remain anonymous.

    • Individual Moderators should be visible

On most of the overseas sites that I visit the convention among Moderators is to extend the membership the courtesy of signing edits or deletions with the addition of a brief description of their reasoning. Looking at the WF rules I note that there is an opt-out from such courtesy and I suggest that this rule is changed for reasons of greater integration between moderators and members leading to a generally friendlier atmosphere born of equality and the removal of doubt.

There is no point in signing a deletion as nobody is going to see it.

It is rare for posts to be deleted without some reference to more opinions. Everything that I remove from the public forum is not actually deleted but placed in another part of the forum for further consideration. Whether it gets back into public view depends on the views of other mods and of Admin. If the consensus is that it should not be re-instated then Admin informs the originator. Otherwise, it gets back on view.

Regarding identifying myself if I alter a post, that depends what it is. Offensive remarks that I change, yes I will identify myself as the editor. Minor changes made to clarify meanings and similar things, I don't think there is much point.

The onus really is on the originator of the thread or individual post not to send items that need modification, isn't it?

i think its because the mods are scared of the backlash..........i think it should be signed and the mods shouldnt be so cowardly... :tomato:

At the risk of quoting myself:

Hmmm....

At the time of me writing this there have been 61 viewings of the thread, three votes cast and five comments (including this one) - three of which are mine.

Make of that what you wish. :)

My opinion is that all edits and deletions should be signed by the mod/admin responsible. That's how it works on the Pit for the most part, sometimes it can be overlooked but that isn't intentional as a rule. We have a policy of signing our work as it seems the polite way of going about the job even if someone has blatantly broken a rule.

Have to say though that modding isn't as easy as it looks, often manage to upset somebody along the way. :P

That's the way of the world. However perfect you think you've done your job, someone, somewhere will want to rubbish it :)

On a more general note, I would remind everyone to look at the Forum Guidelines http://www.windowsforum.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=13343 which will help people keep to the straight and narrow as far as posting is concerned.

I was under the impression that all edits were signed by the mod/admin responsible, that is the way I've always done it, the only exception to this is if I have edited a post where the member has gotten the formatting wrong. I'll edit that annoymously mainly to save a little embarrasment.

If I delete a post then I will usualy pm the member with the reasons why. But don't forget, courtesy is a two way street!

I've voted yes! If any alteration is made to an individuals post then the Mod responsible should be polite enough to say so. Not necessary to give a full explanation in the forum, that can be done via PM with the person concerned.

I can't think of any reason that any Mod should wish to remain anonymous.

From what I've read, this is about mods deleting and/or editing posts without telling people?

Well, Any post I have edited, I have either added edited by, and a reason in the post itself, posted a reply stating why it was edited, or PM'd the user about why I did what I did.

I'd like to feel as though I am doing something good for the general users as well as respected members of this forum, and if anyone has a problem with that, please feel free to PM me and I will handle the matter immediatley.

I have even on a number of occasions PM'd a user about a differen't moderators actions and tried to give an explanation of why it was done and why I would have done the same.

Heres the thing. I agree with moon in that moderators should notify the users in same way, but I don't think it needs to be a rule. We can all follow this and if anyone notices someone hasen't report it to another member of the moderating team or an admin and they will be dealt with appropriatley.

There's my 2 cents :D

I have no wish to be Contentious in any way, its not in my nature. I do have an issue to bring to everyones attention though.

As a member of this forum it is for me to ensure I read, understand and comply with the rules. -pops- quite correctly pointed this out and it does not cause me a problem.

If members have to abide by a set guideline then surely Moderators must do the same and not interpret the rules as they see them. I also feel a little uncomfortable with the fact that a comment has been made in reference to the post from Rebel at 14:31. To me it seems a little on the intimidating side.

I have to disagree northy. Rebel has expressed himself in a way that is normal for him. I have come to understand his manner over the time he has been a member of the forum.

You as a member of the forum have every right to reply to his post in a manner you see fit as long as it stays within the rules and guidelines that we are discussing in this thread.

My personal opinion is that you appear to have singled out Rebel. This is the way in which I have read your post but I have no wish to offend you or any other member and I accept the fact you see things in a different light than I do.

Regards. dj.

regarding Pm'ing members by a mod when a post has been deleted, sometimes the original poster decides to block Pm's from a mod, therefore an explanation cannot be given and obviously the member isn't interested in an explanation anyway

OK then, I'll close it.

It was started with the intent of causing disruption. It has achieved its aim so that's where it can end.

No point in contacting me about it as I'm going out. Very unusual for me to do this but, there it is.

EDIT: You can PM me, but I will also be out for a few minutes :D
