DO-GOODERS are out to turn Santa into Satan - so today The Sun calls on readers to help save the old boy from the sack.

Jovial Father Christmas is HATED by the politically correct brigade.

He is demonised and treated like a wanted man. His crime? Bringing joy and wonder to millions of kiddies around the world.

The Sun launched its Save Our Christmas campaign yesterday by exposing the Scrooges who ban lights, carols, cards and other traditional festive pleasures.

Today we have the Santa sleighers in our sights.

Killjoy bosses at the St Elli shopping centre in Llanelli, South Wales, have installed a webcam to spy on their Santa - in case he is accused of being a PAEDOPHILE.

Manager Gilmour Jones said: "It protects both Santa and the children from allegations of abuse.

"It was either this or not having a Santa's grotto at all. It's a sad sign of the times."

Big-name shops in London's Oxford Street failed to provide Christmas shoppers with the traditional grotto this year.

And child protection charity Kidscape said youngsters should be banned from sitting on Santa's knee.

Director Michelle Elliot said: "Children should not sit on Santa's knee. It's a shame but you can't vet all the people dressed as Santa. There's no need to take the risk."

But the miseries have reckoned without Santa's little helpers - our army of readers. We were inundated with calls and emails yesterday backing our campaign.

We told how bureaucrats fear celebrating Christmas could be offensive to people of other religions.

That was quickly shot down by Inayat Bunglawala, of the Muslim Council of Britain.

He told us: "We respect the rights of Christians to celebrate their main festival.

"Muslims are not offended by Christmas. Christ and the Virgin Mary are important religious figures. There is no question of us taking offence at Nativity scenes.

"Christmas is NOT something the Muslim Council of Britain thinks deserves to be banned."

Reader Taff Iqbal, 26, from Birmingham, said: "It really gets on my nerves when the PC brigade starts trying to ban Christmas.

"I'm a Muslim and I love Christmas. We celebrate the festival with a big tree and presents every year and it is certainly not offensive."

Some bosses use "safety concerns" to justify a ban on Christmas.

But TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: "We back The Sun's campaign. No one should be allowed to get away with using bogus health and safety concerns as an excuse to cancel yuletide cheer."

Liberal Democrat president Simon Hughes MP added: "I fully support The Sun. Christmas is a Christian festival AND a celebration for all. We should all be able to celebrate in the way we see best."

The Rt Rev Mike Hill, Bishop of Bristol, said: "I heartily back The Sun's campaign to ensure that we all get a proper Christmas."

Reader Glenys Crouch, 54, of Barnet, North London said: "What do meddling officials think gives them the right to interfere in our lives?"

Carmel Holmes, 56, from Addlestone, Surrey, said: "It's crazy that our traditions are being threatened. I don't object to other people's beliefs or right to celebrate them."

Harry Foster, 67, from Middlesbrough, said: "People are sick of politically correct rubbish."

Fara Alias from Orlando, Florida, emailed: "I'm a proud Muslim but I will still be enjoying Christmas with my Christian friends."

And Raymond White, 60, of Wolverhampton, said: "Have those trying to ban Christmas got anything between their ears? What will they ban next - the right to breathe?"

Birmingham City Council banned Christmas decorations in the city centre a few years ago, on the grounds that they would offend other religions. They had to be called 'WINTER DECORATIONS', or something like that. Muslims in the city objected STRONGLY to this ban, saying it would contribute to racialist bigotry. In my opinion religion has caused most of the problems in the world, but trying to ban one religions festivities is narrow minded and stupid, and make NO contributions to peace at all. Live and let live I say. Happy Christmas all.
