Apple's Mac mini - Tempting PC Users Everywhere

Weeks before MacWorld San Francisco there were rumors appearing about a "headless Mac", an ultra cheap Mac offered without a monitor.  The first thing that came to mind was an Apple version of an eMachines system.  Interestingly enough however, the rumors also stated that it was an attempt from Apple to get iPod users to give Mac OS X a try.  It sounded odd at the time...

The actual unveiling of the machine however put everything into perspective.  In the PC world, ultra cheap computers usually offer nothing to make them stand out other than their price tag.  Apple's low end offering, dubbed the Mac mini, for the first time brought something unique and interesting to the entry level marketplace - style.

Look at any of the successful PC manufacturers, Dell, HP, Gateway and none of them have attempted to make the entry level PC an enticing item for the intended market.  What draws users to these ultra cheap PCs is their price point and the idea that they need a computer.  With the Mac mini, Apple took a much different approach - attract users because of style (and size) and the idea that they need a computer, and remain competitive with price.

You betcha sweet ass I have... Two Sundays ago I placed my order at the apple store.

Point: Mac mini is cheaper than other macs and allows a Windows user the affordable option of owning a mac. This is what Steve Jobs intention was...

Nothing*

I've just always wanted [Not needed] one...but not to the point where I'm spending an enormous amount of cash on a mac...but this mac mini allows you [err me] to spend a not so enormous amount of cash on a mac [this is the point of the mac mini].

*weeeeel MAC vs PCA - How long is a piece of string? :(

The whole big deal of a Mac is this: It's a very easy to use interface (OSX+Darwin+Aqua) - but on the inside, UNIX baby! BSD core... so you get all of the power of a UNIX system, the speed of the PPC architecture, Mac's proprietary hardware, and the easy to use interface.

IMO macs are harder to use than windows. My school has some macs, and I abhor the user interface. Also, half of them are broken at any given time (one system error or another).

Macs are good for video/graphics editors and they suck for gamers and anybody with 3 hours to learn windows (IMO)

Macs are good for video/graphics editors

That may be but, my son has a graphics business and only one out of eleven of his graphic artists uses a Mac.

I said in another thread on this subject that Steve Jobs could, with a little more inspiration, integrate a keyboard and screen to this device invent the laptop computer

LOL - he's right though. Maybe not for image editing, but certainly for video editing. That said, I still wouldn't go near one with a 10-foot pole.

Macs are very useful when it's raining

Macs are very useful when you need a fishtank (iMacs at least).

Change of heart?

Well, the iMac and the Mac mini - I don't like anything that hides itself so much I can't work on it...

Full-size macs are cool, you can add/remove hardware, etc... but those 2 machines... no thanks.

They don't keep you dry in the rain either

LOL - I guess not, but then again, my PC's never kept me dry in the rain (never really been put in the situation)

I may have puzzled you with another British term. British people have an old fashioned name for a rain coat, namely Macintosh, hence my pun.
