expertec
The machine is currently running Windows ME (ugh!), and I am supposed to be upgrading it to XP.You put in the CD Key and it will do the upgrade advisor thing, and start to install windows. Then it comes up with fatal error blue screen, says restart to continue setup. After restart there is a boot menu, continue installing XP or cancel XP setup. If you continue setup it starts all over again. If you cancel, it goes back to windows ME.What is causing the errors, and would they still happen if I do a format and clean install? nellie2
I don't know what is causing the errors... probably ME! Do a clean install. You shouldn't have any problems as all you will have to do is show XP the ME os disk.
-pops-
This has happened to me doing upgrades. Best to take nel's approach and do a clean install - after, of course, making a backup of everything you want to keep. :)
Cpt James T. Kirk
yeah, do a fresh format and install it'll ask for os disk and just put in the me disk then put back in the xp and it'll install for you.
expertec
I know about doing a clean install from an upgrade, I have advised many people on this myself  Format and clean install was what I was thinking of, I will take a spare hard drive with me for backing things up before I start.Thanks. :)

expertec
Just to let you know, it went pretty well.Copied all the data onto a spare hard drive, then formatted and installed XP and SP2 no problems. :)Think I got the right XP modem drivers as well, but I didn't have time to test it.Got most of the data back off the spare hard drive (everything important), but some files/folders just wouldn't copy. They kept giving errors about Cyclic Redundancy, whatever that is :(

scuzzman
Cyclic redundancy means too many bicycles!Seriously now - what's the sense in a bike when you can just run everywhere right doug?
doug
A bit off topic but not allowed to use bike yet. It's gathering sawdust in garage while I'm trying to make left handed cold frames. Doing 5th at I trype.
expertec
What is a left handed cold frame? I didn't know they had hands
doug
Erm, they're made using only the left hand. I only hope Anne's right handed plants she's potting up don't get confused.

expertec
What's left on that drive is not hugely important, but if I ran Checkdisk on it do you think I could recover those files?
madboy33
expertechi mateCyclic redundancy is either corrupt data or damaged hddORa checkdisc is needed
