As the guy responsible for IE, I wanted to say a couple of things about it. First, some basics: we’re committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. Betas of IE7 will be available this summer. This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software. Why? Because we listened to customers, analysts, and business partners. We heard a clear message: “Yes, XP SP2 makes the situation better. We want more, sooner. We want security on top of the compatibility and extensibility IE gives us, and we want it on XP. Microsoft, show us your commitment.” I think of today’s announcement as a clear statement back to our customers: “Hey, Microsoft heard you. We’re committing.” Why are we talking about it today? Because our customers and partners have asked us, with increasing urgency, what our plans are. We want to convey our intentions to our customers and partners clearly and in a timely way. I’ve gotten questions about the ship date. Yes, we have a date in mind. I’ll talk about the date after we get feedback from customers and partners. We’re going to release a beta and listen, then refresh the beta and listen some more. The converts to the alternatives are not going to be easily persuaded to go back. Even so, there are an awful lot of Windows users who have never heard of the alternatives and will continue to use what BG tells them. I use IE6 and Firefox at the moment, both are fine but I still prefer IE6 as my default browser. I know lots of people don't like it but it has never caused me a single problem when using it with 98se and for the past eighteen months with XP Pro. I find IE6 to be very fast, stable and hard to tell the difference with it and Firefox. :)[Edit] I do prefer Firefox for its ability to use tabs and that you can enlarge the text/graphics in a forum without losing quality. IE6 does not offer this facility, maybe IE7 will.I have been using Internet Explorer ever since I had a PC over 3 years ago, and so far I have had no problems. I do, however, keep my operating system up to date regarding security patches.I will upgrade to IE 7 when it has been thoroughly tested and the (major) bugs 'ironed out'. It is a bit of a U-turn with Microsoft's forthcoming updated IE version 7, as originally they said that IE wouldn't be updated until Longhorn was released. andsome Posted March 13, 2005 Report Share Posted March 13, 2005 I see that Firefox have had to issue a new version, because of vulnerabilities. It is proving to be exactly as I thought. The Firefox fans have always pointed to how secure and free from attacks it is when compared with IE. I have always maintained that as it becomes more popular, so it will be attacked by the idiots more and more. It remains to be seen whether they will have the resources to respond quickly as they get busier and busier. It will take a hell of a lot to drag me away from IE and OE. IE6 is an excellent browser with express or outlook as your email client.I do like to use Firefox though for the two benefits that I see. Tabbed browsing and the ability to enlarge text in forums.
