It still sticks in my throat the sight of the police waving their payslips at the striking miners.

Up until then I was an unquestioning subject - that was the moment when the state turned against the people.

The time of PC49, Z Cars, Dixon of Dock Green etc etc was gone forever.

If you look at local government, district government, and national government these days it's us against them as opposed to them being responsible to us.

From parking to council tax to anything.

The country has become a madhouse.

I think so also. Black smoke, white smoke. gold challises, renowned art work, priceless sculptures, silk garments, priests molesting children....increase your donation to the Church.

Sad to see the Pope go soon...long live the Pope.

I was born and raised a Catholic. Even spent some time in a Seminary. Scandals tore me away from the Church, including the Michael Jacko Priests who had a life of molesting young boys.

Have you ever seen the riches of the Vatican?

And the Pope recently warned us ordinary folks about accumulating material riches.

Confusing?

You bet.

BTW: Sorry to hear about your ex-PM passing away. And I did not mean to sidetrack the thread....just had to get some things off my chest.... :P

Callaghan may not have been the greatest prime minister ever. He was however a damned sight more honest than all of todays lot put together. What a sorry bunch they are. I am not a socialist, but had to feel sorry for him at the time. He had Marxist unions etc to contend with. Who knows, had he started his career a few years later, and was PM today, things might have been different.

It looks like he may pass away sometime tomorrow (Rome time). :(

Regardless of my opinion of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope John was indeed a great man and was very instrumental in many changes, including the downfall of communism in the former USSR.
