andsome Posted June 11, 2005 Report Share Posted June 11, 2005 I have sometimes found that System Restore will not work, even though the latest restore point is recent. I have come to a conclusion on this and have just done a little experiment. I used System Restore OK with no problem. I then ran Crap Cleaner and tried System Restore again. This time it did not work. I think the moral is, that every time you use Crap Cleaner, you should create a new restore point, as a safeguard. Anyone else found this to be the case? In future I will create a restore point after using Cr*p Cleaner.It's not a big issue for me as creating a new restore point takes only around a minute and Cr*p Cleaner is an excellent program IMHO. I think that System Restore has difficulties when any deletions have been made to the registry. I'm glad to hear that it is not my computer playing up. djohn Posted September 4, 2005 Report Share Posted September 4, 2005 Good point andsome, but I'm not sure if its correct! :unsure:I've just tried system restore after using Ccleaner and it brought back the dummy files I had created for the test.System restore will automatically make a restore point every 24 hours if you leave your machine running, or if you install a program or application that does not have a Microsoft signed certificate. Also every time you turn your machine off. As pops says though, never rely on this as a safeguard for your data, Always make a backup of your work. It does what it is supposed to do and clears out the dross. It's just that I have found that if I try to restore to a restore point created before using Crap Cleaner, it won't work. Now, after using crap cleaner I make a fresh restore point. I have also found that it pays me to turn off System Restore from time to time and clear out the old restore points, then turn it back on and create a new one. After all, I have never had any reason to want to go back several weeks, I can't see the point. Your correct in saying we don't need to keep restore points that are quite old, but again the amount of disk space reserved for this can be adjusted to allow less restore points. It then works on a basis of first one made, first one out as a new restore is made.Always a good idea to be able to go back at least a month or so otherwise we would need to check every program/application on our machine after each new update or install/un-install of applications to make sure none of them have been affected.One more thing worth remembering is if virus gets through our defences, the recommended way is to turn off system restore before cleaning otherwise the virus may be hiding in the restore points and will return. This is correct, but as soon as you turn of system restore, you lose all your restore points in one go. There is an alternative way to do it.If a virus gets through, do a clean as normal, if its still on your system then instead of turning off system restore and losing every restore point, go back a couple at a time until you get rid of the virus, then make a new restore point from that time point. I wish my Mac hadn't blown up :( Has anyone used PC Rescue? I assume Crap Cleaner (LOL) is a similar progam.Also, how do you create a Restore Point. Never having done this before, I have no idea.
