D4\/!d Posted August 1, 2005 Author Report Share Posted August 1, 2005 I know some of the West Midlands beers. For example: Ansells Mild, Bathams Best, Holdens Bitter, Banks's Original. Then of course there is the Olde Swan at Netherton. Their Entire is something else. And The Beacon Hotel, Sedgley who do the very popular Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild - at 6% it's a bit too pokey for me. But don't give me any of that terrible Tetleys stuff. Yuk!! andsome Posted August 2, 2005 Report Share Posted August 2, 2005 I tried Watneys Red Barrel when a new leisure centre opened nearby many years ago. the only thing that I could liken the taste to, was nutty flavoured pine disinfectant. The bar did very little trade, many people taking a bottle of Scotch in, in the wifes handbag at dances etc. I asked the manager why they did not put in a decent brew. The answer was that Watneys had paid for the bar. After a few months, that bar was closed, and a new one built further down the room. Eventually the Watneys bar was dismantled. andsome Posted August 4, 2005 Report Share Posted August 4, 2005 Hobsons rings a bell somewhere in the old memory. At the bowls club I usually drink John Smiths cask ale. I am always ready to try any of the guest beers and particularly enjoy Bombardier bitter when it's on. I have recently also tried a couple of guest beers whose name elude the old memory at present, but one was an extremely pale wheat beer, and was very palatable. I remember Theakstons "Old Peculiar" back in the sixties. It was just like drinking black velvet. It became very popular and the Theakston family brewery in Masham had greater and greater demand, all over the Yorkshire area and well beyond. Along came "Scottish and Newcastle" and took them over, and moved some of the "manufacture" elsewhere. The thing that was then purveyed as Old Peculiar was indeed peculiar. Result...fall in sales and then an eventual sell off of the Theakston brewery and name. Meanwhile one of the remaining brothers has started up "Black Sheep". Very good it is too. I just hope that Old Peculiar will reappear in its old form before long, because I believe it was all taken back into the original family. Tankus Posted August 4, 2005 Report Share Posted August 4, 2005 Old peculiar is still going strong ...easy to get hold of in the bottle (ASDA Sainsburys ,tesco's .....etc) ...... even on tap at the (occasional guest ) 3 barrels on Charing cross road .....my fav watering hole if I'm of to the cinemas down Leicester square .....Quite a few real ale pubs around where I live ....
