Thanks, this looks like an obvious solution.  I will download the free version to a folder ready for installation.

I had done the same as andsome and downloaded the personal version in error. However, when I read the above posts, I uninstalled the personal version and installed the free one using Boris's kind guidance above.

How do you clever clogs manage to type a squared with it's mathematical formula? Do you have a special keyboard? ( I don't want one, I just wondered)

A square or superscript 2 i.e. ² is given by pressing Alt and 0178 on the numeric keypad. Note don't use the number keys on the alpha keyboard.

You can do a cube sign as well ³³³ by using Alt and 0179

All sorts of oddities are available from the Character Map. Start -> All Progams -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Character Map. Click on the oddity you want and its Alt number combo will be shown in bottom left of the window. You can also click and drag the item to the place you want.

I've just been playing around with the Character Map and I am astonished....I had never seen it or heard of it before.

Like it, but why the hell isn't this common knowledge? How are we supposed to find out these things. Incidentally I have found that is is necessary to activate the Numbers lock key first on the numeric pad.

There is some curiosity about the Character Map elsewhere in the forum and, frankly, I was surprised that it seems such a mystery.

Character Map is accessed from Start -> All programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Character Map. Here you will have access to all the weird signs and symbols that Windows provides. Most of the useful ones can be placed in a document by drag and drop OR by highlighting the character and looking in the bottom right of the window for the Alt and number combination. For example:

Alt + 0178 gives ², Alt + 0129 gives ³. There are hundreds of these things you can get.

Important points to note are it only works from the numeric keypad - not the alpha keyboard and Num Lock must be on.

Note this is the first post in this thread - I decided later to move the others (referred to) but, as they had an earlier posting time, they came before this one. :(

I learnt to use Character Map when I first used a PC. Wingdings was always the flavour of the month for many months. And we also used to show off with typing actual fractions instead of 1/2 (Alt+0189), 3/4 (Alt+0190), and 1/4 (Alt+0188). Try it. It's fun. :P :P :P

I learnt to use Character Map when I first used a PC. Wingdings was always the flavour of the month for many months. And we also used to show off with typing actual fractions instead of 1/2 (Alt+0189), 3/4 (Alt+0190), and 1/4 (Alt+0188). Try it. It's fun.  :P  :P  :P

You know, I never thought of that. I use Character Map a lot for scientific characters and I've always gone the Start -> etc route.

There are quite a few characters that I can remember by heart, though, as I use them so much, particularly 0176 (degree sign °) and 0183 (decimal point ·)

...and then you can assign a Shortcut Key such as Ctrl+Alt+C. That way you can use the keyboard to bring up Character Map, rather than using Winkey+M and fumbling around for the mouse to get to the icon on the desktop :P :P :P

I have always had the Character Map (and other useful accessories) on my Office Shortcut Bar. Another place where you could keep frequently used programs is the Quick Launch Bar. Both just require a single click to start a program.
