IP addresses

There has been a huge 'to-do' about IP ads being passed on without permission at PC pitstop.

I hadn't noticed that most of ours are on show. I did a search on a few and found that it doesn't exactly point to where a person lives - just a general area.

But the argument over there was that it would be easy to hack into these addresses.

What do the more learned people on this forum think?

Should ours be on show?

Is this just paranoia?

Are they on show to the whole membership or just to "the staff"?

I don't think IP addesses are all that secret - if NeoAlliance can find them, anyone else can if they wanted to. I've never told anyone here my IP address - two reasons - no idea what it is other than seeing it on here and I haven't been asked but, nevertheless, it appears on each of my posts.

Just done a whois to check what information is available on my own address and find that I am on BT at BT central. Nothing more of any importance than that.

Mmmm - bit of paranoia then..........

Yup and their annual slag off the mods fest over there.

Only the mods and admin can view IP addies, most forums are the same. Enables us to keep track of any dubious posters/spammers.

There have been the occasional signature images here that show IP addies, these are made with javascript and show the readers IP address only.

I would just like to add that it is common practice for site admins to share the IP and common login (if there is any) information for known spammers when they are doing the rounds... so that we can add them to our block list.

But that is about it really
