I would like to think that the Neo Planet forums have everything a user is looking for; for example, helpful support, a friendly community and an easy to navigate site etc.

However I do recognise the need to continually develop the site, one of the most recent changes was moving from Windows Forum to Neo Planet, however little additions like the Mac and Linux Support forums also show that we are open to suggestions and the needs of our members.

I am now opening up this topic where members (and of course staff) can state what they like and dislike about Neo Planet, and what features they would like to see added or even removed from the forum. This could be something as simple as adding or removing a forum category, or creating a service like Neo Planet Webmail.

So go ahead and suggest!

Craig

How about putting back 'The Gallery'?

OK, the gallery was removed at the beginning of the year when the yearly renewal was due because myself and other staff thought that it was no longer productive.

At the time no one had posted in it for many months, and the pictures in the gallery (although not a problem) were mainly nature pictures. Although I like to promote a sense of community on the forum, the pictures posted really didn’t fit in with what the forum is about.

However I shall append a poll about the gallery for you all to vote, and we will discuss the results as they become available.

Yes I did vote. I had several on the original, including that nude of me that I posted here recently.

One feature that I would like to see if possible, whether we have the gallery or not, is auto sizing of any photos, so that they cannot appear any larger than say 10" X 8" on the computer screen. Both in the gallery in the past, and also in open form recently, we have had pictures that it is impossible view all at once. We have had to scroll across the screen to see part of the picture at a time. Is this possible?

I think Mr catgate makes a very good point and, as he says, some forums are very cringeworthy.

Neo Planet (neé Windows Forum) has been a good mix of the serious point with a little light diversion which worked very well most of the time (there have been a few hiccups, as we well know). Trying to make it all-things-to-all-men cannot work and any changes and/or additions will need to be considered very carefully, in my opinion.

I voted to bring the gallery back as I did view it before it went and I liked it.

I particularly liked the members photos.

I agree with what Craig said though and if it is brought back we will have to try and post new pictures a bit more frequently as going many months without new postings isn't very good at all.

I agree with pops on this, changes are a good thing, but need to be thought through very carefully. Please post as many ideas as you can think of and I'm sure we will be able to use some of them. :)

While on this subject, the gallery was great, but costing Craig a lot of money to keep running, in fact the whole forum cost Craig a substantial amount each month and this is why we now have the advertising at the bottom of the page to help out a little with running cost. If any member can think of another unobtrusive way of bringing income into the forum, please PM Craig with your Ideas. Thanks, dj. :)

I liked the gallery. A few of us did post other than 'nature'. I can see it would be a waste if the response was as bad as last time.

Maybe we should have a poll on how many people actually took any interest in it?

The chat room is a good miss, I think......

As for the contributions - I would be happy to send a nominal sum now and then - but wouldn't want to commit to a regular amount - just can't afford it.

What would a decent 'nominal sum' be? You can pm me someone....... :)

I think if we all wrote to our beloved leader, if we can just find out which day he will be in U.K. , and point out that this forum keeps many geriatic delinquents off the streets, and out of the drug houses, he would be only too pleased to divert some of his slush fund to NP.

Oh I didn't know that the Gallery cost extra :o

I thought it was already accounted for in the forum budget.

After reading this I now think that we can do without it after all as it's not an essential thing to have.

You are probably right, maybe just post a pic now and again on the lounge forum ? in a sub division similar to the joke bit.

Forum Search

I would like to make another suggestion. The forum search, as it is now (and has been for a long time), is nearly unusable. I use it frequently, e.g. to look up old forum posts - things that have already been answered, but I rarely find what I'm looking for on the first attempt. Trying to correct it I always get

Sorry, the board administrator has enabled search flood control. Please wait at least 30 seconds before trying again.

OK, I can wait 30 seconds once, but if I still don't find it on the next attempt, I usually give up.

I have not seen this on any other forum. Do you (forum administrators) really think the server would be overwhelmed if you would disable this "feature"?

And another suggestion on Forum Search.

There is an option where we can specify a Filter by Member Name. This is not very clear. My member name is pwillener, but the Search does not find anything with this name. It is the Display Name that must be specified there.

1. The gallery. I haven't been a member long enough to have seen the gallery. Presumably it contained pictures members had taken and submitted for "hanging". If this is the case, it seems to me that this is covered in the Lounge where I have seen some delightful pictures recently.

2. Forum search. I do use forum search and have found no problems myself.

3. Forum content. I agree with catgate and pops. I find there is a good mix of "technical" computer advice with lighter stuff, cerainly enough for me to keep up with.

Thos.

Hello Pat Willener, Flood control is enabled on the forum mainly to stop the forum from being spammed. I didn't realise it also applied to the search feature, I'll check on that and see if there is a reason, or if it can be disabled from the search facility. :)

Thanks for the explanation, djohn - we certainly wouldn't want to open the floodgates to spammers. Would be great if it could be disabled for the forum search :flowers:
