Opinion: Different way of being kept up to date with the forum

A new way of being kept up to date with what is happening on a particular website is through what is called Really Simple Syndication [or RSS for short]. This is used to be updated about new additions to websites without actually viewing the website; yup you don't even need to open your browser!

RSS works by subscribing to a feed; this feed is what will inform you of any updates. The information in this feed can contain a little description on what is new, what's changed and of course a link to the new stuff on the website. So all you have to do is subscribe to the feed, when a new feed it detected you will be notified and you can then check it out.

If you are using Opera or Firefox then RSS subscribing and reading is built in by default although you might not have known that. If an RSS feed is detected Opera shows this by a little blue RSS button in the address bar. Firefox shows this, bottom right with a little orange icon. MS Internet Explorer does not yet currently support RSS [although IE7 will]. There are also many applications that can handle RSS feeds...

If you're still wondering what the hell I’m on about please check this out: RSS Wiki

So to the point, would you ever think about subscribing to an RSS link to the separate forums on Neoplanet?

As far as Neoplanet is concerned, I go to new posts and catch up with all the new stuff that way. So what would be the advantage?

You can use Opera and Firefox (not sure about IE7) to track RSS feeds (called Live Bookmarks in FF).

Trust me ;)

To that, there would be none.

But if you have other RSS feeds, not forum related then I'm sure you would find a use for it.

I always forget to fire up my RSS program. I am subscribed to a few feeds but I don't like progs loading themselves automatically at start up... then I forget to turn it on!

Get ready!

Absolutely. Although I do not quite understand what you mean by subscribing on Opera, Firefox, or IE7. All the RSS feeds I get is through Thunderbird.

Works in the same way.

RSS Feed added: The Lounge [the feed will update every hour [this can be changed] and a maximum of 10 posts will be seen in the feed]

Scroll to the bottom and you should see an RSS image, click this and it will open the RSS link, but here it is...

http://forums.neoplanet.co.uk/index.php?act=rssout&id=1

http://forums.neoplanet.co.uk/index.php?act=rssout&id=1 [Clicking this without an application associated with RSS will show a load of stupid text]

Once you've subscribed, this is what it looks like:

Opera:

Firefox:

But there are loads of applications out there that will handle RSS.

See what you think!

p.s. Just one feed for now....no point in adding any others if there not used :(

The feed is set to update every 60 minutes, so if a new topic appears you won't see it until the timer hits 60 minutes and then the feed will update to reflect the added topic.

Lounge only? Maybe an RSS for Headlines, Guides and Reviews as well?

Headlines :D
