catgate
Us quitters are probably the most aggressive anti smokers.I think you are quite right. This was something I had noticed long before I gave up, and have rigorously tried to avoid duplicating. It seems to be a bit like the zealot who redoubles his effort after forgetting his original purpose. One of our junior lab. managers was completely over the top with his fervour. You could be sure that at every meeting he attended there would be complaint after complaint....he wanted windows open etc etc. He was formerly a 40 a day man and a Christian too. He used to go round furtively placing "Thank You For Not Smoking" cards in other peoples offices. So I went and, not too furtively, placed a "Thank you for Not Farting" card in his. artist
I went from 40 day to nothing - willpower is the answer in the end.I had tries cutting down - and stopping, and the pretend cigarette - lasted a day or so.I was determined in the end - got awful chesty coughs. The main problem is finding something to do with the hands. In my case, I bought a huge 'painting by numbers' set and did a bit at the times when I would have had a cigarette. Looked a mess permanently on the table - for almost three months - but it helped me. That was 20 years ago - I'm over the 'other side' now - can't stand the smell, won't let people smoke in the house. Though most of our friends ahve stopped too. deuces wild
He was formerly a 40 a day man and a Christian too.And a Christian too?Not to start anything but I need a clarification. What does being a Christian have to do with this guy's attitude on smoking? You lost me with that remark.
andsome
I can always find something to do with my hands.
rong
Maby not so Christian to do something yourself and later to make out that others are wrong to do the same when you stop.

prctr
The time I managed to quit for four months went as follows:I got up one morning for my workout, and simply decided to postpone my morning smoke until after my first coffee. Then, it was postponed until after I arrived at work, and again put off until my mid-morning break time. I just kept postponing the cigarette, by saying to myself "if you still want one AFTER (fill in the blank), then you can have it.It worked, until I made the mistake of thinking I could smoke "just one" some months later. Now, it may be Zyban time...............Happt New year to al! :D
don't ask
I will never give up trying to give up :paperbag1:
scuzzman
I will eventually give up, I suppose. I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to do it, and I'm not quite ready just yet (I and not failing again). Thanks for your supporting words, I will make sure to remember your advice. :)BTW: That Zyban is sounding pretty good right now - is it by prescription or OTC? -pops-
In the UK Zyban is prescription and many medical practices require you to have therapy sessions before and during your using it. This is because, as I stated earlier, there has to be a definite positivity into giving up smoking. If you don't have this then you may as well not bother - it just won't work - in exactly the same way as any other substance addiction.I understand the therapy is not "deep" and consists mainly of a buddy system and self help. andsome
Just bear in mind that it makes your breath stink, your clothes stink and everyone else's clothes stink. Apart from which it damages your health very badly. As I said earlier, I wish to hell that I had never started. Almost every common cold end up in a chest infection.
