*Must Have* Security and Maintenance programs

Besides an AV and a firewall program, what other programs are considered *Must Have*? I ask this as I want my son's new computer to be properly protected and maintained.

My opinion:

1. CleanUp

2. Ad-Aware SE Personal

3. SpyBot

4. Perfect Disk running in the automatic defrag mode.

5. Tune-Up Utilities 2006 with 1-Click Maintenance running in the automatic test mode.

6. SpywareBlaster

7. SpyDefense

8. StartUp Inspector.

9. Everst Home Edition

10. Acronis True Image

11. System Mechanic

I would have included the MS AntiSpyware beta program but until they get it sorted out I will pass on it.

What are your recommendations?

BTW: I prefer CleanUp to CrapCleaner so unless you can make a strong recommendation to include it, don't mention it. ;)

TIA!

I see nothing wrong with the list above; I have different products installed, but my guess is that you are comfortable with these you have listed.

I would probably add Firefox, and perhaps Thunderbird, if you don't have another preferred email client.

Like Pat says, the list seems suitable if you are happy and familiar with the programs on it.

Personally, PerfectDisk caused me problems and I now use Diskeeper.

Please note as well that Everest is not a current program so, unless you have a copy already, it is difficult to get hold of. SIW suggested by Nel is an excellent alternative have a look here.

You might want to have A squared and Ewido available for emergencies.

I would add to the list regprotect ,

RegistryProt is a 100% free, standalone, compact, low-level realtime registry monitor and protector

Also on that particular site (if you feel the need to shell out $$ ) is Processguard, however Prevx does a similar job free, but I found it a little hungrier than Processguard on resources.

Prevx is an All-In-One Solution

Although Prevx will happily run in conjunction with other PC security software, it protects from Viruses, Spyware AND Adware meaning it's the ONLY security software you need.
