Record low..................

We have not had anywhere near as bad a winter as was forecast. Very little snow, not like it used to be a few years ago. It's all part of global warming. I appreciate that at present you have exceptionally low temperatures, but the weather all over the world is going crazy, and getting more extreme. The outlook for Britain is that eventually as the Gulf stream slows down and eventually stops, we will get a lot colder, after an initial warmer spell. The politicians who cannot agree to cut carbon emissions have a lot to answer for to future generations.

I agree with your view on global warming but, unfortunately, until an alternative to the internal combusion engine is found then the world will continue to use petrol and diesel for fuel.

My point is that NOT enough is being done. Already there are hybrid engines available. Why don't governments reduce taxes to encourage their wider use? Also as long as politicians are allowed to own oil company shares they have no incentive to cut down on oil usage. Very little is done in most areas to encourage the use of public transport. Taxes on fuel go ever higher, and the government tell us that this is to encourage us off the roads, yet where I live public transport is almost non existent, and what there is is inconvenient and dirty. Look at the amount of fuel that is wasted on glitter in places like Las Vegas. I am positive that fuel consumption in places like that could be cut by well over half.

The news and weather people here are over reacting as usual, a couple of scattered snow flurries that scarcely last a day and they start screaming about Arctic conditions and blizzards. No sense of proportion I'm afraid.

To top it off there's always an endless supply of loons that drive off into snowy conditions in ordinary two wheel drive cars with no snow chains, warm clothing, food or even a spade are surprised when they get stuck, then start looking for somebody else to blame.

I had no idea this was allowed :0

I agree.

I think our winters are a lot milder than they used to be like in 1947 where the snow allegedly was as high as a hedge.

It goes without saying that this was before I was born!

1947 was a terrible winter. This illustrates my point, in that we can possibly expect milder weather until eventually the Gulf Stream packs up. Remember that we are on the same latitude as Siberia..

In the city where I grew up in Canada it was not unusual to have winter temps at -32F with a wind chill factor of -50F. :0

It is on the Great Lakes and the wind would come off the lake making it very cold. You did not go outside with any part of your skin showing. Every inch had to be covered. I remember my mum and I knitting nose warmers. :D

The cold and snow (8 to 10 feet normally) is the main reason I moved to the U.S.

GM has already made like 1.2 million vehicles, that run on ethanol, which is made from Corn oil. They've put up a few stations, and a GM plant is being constucted about an hour away, that is making only vehicles that run on ethanol. At least somebody is trying to reduce pollution.
