Upload Speed

Hey all, I have a question about trying to get my upload speed up. I enjoy online gaming a lot, but unfortunately with my cable internet connection I often lag out of games. Now I tested my speed on different sites, and most only showed the download speed, which every site said was great (2734 kbps). My upload speed, on the otherhand, is pretty terrible at 240 kbps, and my unprofessional opinion is that my upload speed is the reason I lag and drop out of so many online games. Also, me trying to host an online game is a joke....everyone in the room lags out but me. So i was wondering if you guys think my upload speed is the problem, and if so if there is anything i can do about it. I appreciate the help.

Upload speeds are always a small fraction of download speeds on all "normal" Internet connections.

I've just checked my speeds and I'm getting at the moment 5714.1 download and 378.2 upload - which is what I've come to expect petty much as a norm.

I don't think there is anything you can do about it but, a word with your ISP might get them to tweak some little button somewhere.

My understanding is that in the UK :-

If you are an ASDL user (Assymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) then you will have upload speeds of up to 256Kbps and download speeds of up to 8 Mbps. The upload speed is only a fraction of the download speed to save bandwidth and mirrors people's normal requirement where they need to download lots of data but upload only a little.

If you want a connection where the upload and download speeds are equal then you need an SDSL connection which is used by businesses and costs at least 10 times as much as ASDL

Cable users can get upload speeds of up to 384Kbps - unless you subscribe to a high cost business line for greater speeds.

Not sure about the USA - but I guess the same principles apply.

My understanding is that in the UK :-

If you are an ASDL user (Assymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) then you will have upload speeds of up to 256Kbps and download speeds of up to 8 Mbps.

It used to be up to 256 Kbps but with the Max launch it is now up to 448 Kbps and for business packages up to 832 Kbps.

These figures all include 'overheads' so you never see this speed and as an example, my upload speed is around 373 Kbps with the odd 73 Kbps being used for 'overheads'.

Similarly, even if you sync at the maximum rate (8.128 Mbps), the fastest download speed you can hope to get is 7.15 Mbps - see this page

I'm currently on Max and am on a 4 Mb connection which is a lot quicker than when I was stuck on my old 1 Mb connection speed because I lived too far from the exchange!

Okay so I just ran PingPlotter to try and see if I could see anything majorly wrong with my internet and this is what I came up with:

Hops 2, 3, and 4 are 100% Packetless

I think thats a problem, can you guys give me any advice here?

EDIT: It appears Hop 15 is also 25% Packetless every few minutes.

Yeah it is the same in the US, and for good reason. The ISP don't want you running a business/server behind their walls unless your paying for it. As for you packet loss, I don't know why your losing them but at 2,3 or 4 hops I would guess those hops are to your ISP. What type of packets are they?

Hmmm....I'm not exactly sure how to tell what kind of packets they are. I know I am sending them to Google.com, but I don't know how to tell their kind.....

Sorry it doesn't matter much what type they are. I just checked out the pingplotter program and I'm gonna try it out also, it seems interesting. But yeah its probably your ISP or your ISP's ISP thats dropping the packets. You should do a 24 or 48 hour ping and find out if it happens at certain times or what is going on. Bandwidth saturation can happen also if your transferring a lot of data. They have some good info on their site about problems like this. I would think a cable connection would fluctuate a lot. I am going to test mine tonight and I'll post what I find.

Some hops/servers are configured to ignore ping requests.

Hop 15 does look to be a problem though, but possibly not on your isps' patch.

Yeah your not going to be able to get to their webserver with most icmp packets, like this type, however I can ping them with an echo request. I still don't get really anything near 25% packet loss let along 100%. I don't think my packet loss went over 4 percent on the last hop I could get. I didn't get over 1% for the other hops. I had it set on 15s intervals, sampling to unlimited and ran it for 2 hours. There was more route changes than I thought there would be. I'm still unsure about why I have big red 15s interval blocks every so often?

What domain name do you have for hops 2, 3 and 4 and who is your ISP?
