Support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition (Me) ends on July 11, 2006. Microsoft will end public and technical support by this date. This also includes security updates. Microsoft is providing final notifications to customers to end the extended security update support for these products. We recommend that customers who are still running Windows 98 or Windows Me upgrade to a newer, more secure Microsoft operating system, such as Windows XP, as soon as possible.Well, I'll be expecting my brand new XP disk to arrive in the mail anytime then..! They can pay for it and i don't expect to have to activate it online either..!! ;) I wonder where they think people get their money from., A tree in the backyard..?? There has to be a point where, well, WE move on. If you can do any better at making an operating system 'better and more secure' then give us a shout when it's done!Recently there was an exploit in Windows 98 [can't remember what it was though] and Microsoft said to fix it would require making radical changes to the way 98 works. Errr they ain't going to do that because they could cause othe problems [application compatibilty etc] and they just haven't got the time to do that.Of course they're not going to send you a disk of XP because you didn't pay for. 8 Years on Windows 98 is money well spent if you ask me. But as the internet becomes a more violent place to visit, they're has to be advances in technology to make Windows more secure. I have just put a box together and loaded it with Fedora Core 5 which is GUI and it is very windows like in operation. I am having "fun" trying to get BB up and running, but I think my depth of ignorance is as big a factor as Linux. I am intending making the switch when I get this problem sorted out. It has with it a huge quantity of software. My Epson Stylus just plugged in and ran. It seems to have photo editing and other graphics progs. etc. I have not fully explored it all yet, but it is certainly the best Linux I have looked at over the last couple of years. There has to be a point where, well, WE move on.I agree.I think it's been supported for long enough as it is, after all, 8 years old.I bought XP around 5 years ago and when Vista is launched next year, I will have no regrets in upgrading as I reckon the money I paid back then was worth it.If you want a free operating system then learning to use a Linux distro is the only way! Win 2K..?? I only use it because i can't get on the internet with Ubuntu yet.. I was however VERY annoyed when Symantec informed me that I could buy a new licence for System Works 2003, but would qualify only for updates, and that support could no longer be offered.
