I am very slowly coming to grips with it (well, OK, it has me by the throat then), and the more I do with it the less I dislike it. It is certainly more pliable than any version of Windows (although I have fractured it a couple of times).

To me it is very similar to the way I used to run my old DOS machines. The whole thing runs on nested Batch files, with a GUI. The big problem is the nomenclature/language, but as some on here will know I speak rubbish fluently (and frequently) and so am able to understand some of it.

Artist, I would not go back to Windows, SuSe 10.1 does everything that i need without having to run antivirus and spyware programs.

For a Windows user it is hard at first, it is just getting used to doing things differently.

That may be but when XP is redundant and you need a higher spec system to run Visa, or what ever MS lend you next, Linux will do the job just as well if not better, without the extra cost.

You also will not have to relearn how to run 'Windows' :P :P

I'm currently running puppylinux from my usb thumb drive. It can be run from a live CD, it's also possible to save all your settings etc to your hdd. Doesn't need a a linux partition, and runs in ram. No changes to your system, no viruses and speedy. Apart from my wireless card it ran straight from the box as it were.

I don't mind upgrading to a 64 bit PC as my current PC is around 5 years old now.

I've run Vista as BETA and I like it and will be upgrading for definite next year.

Yea i think that puppy linux is probably about one the best linux's out there, It just works.! and it's easy to use..

There is a limit to how fast a normal person's PC needs to be. Even a 32 bit with a decent set up is fast enough for most people. However there are people who need/want 64 bit for a variety of reasons. Probably the majority of them want it just because it is there, but that it their prerogative.

What I dislike about all this is the way M$ will now abandon 32 bit, as will all the the other software makers, and ultimately everyone, like it or not, will be coerced into using 64 bit, and forced to dump a lot of good kit.

The internet seems to be the driving force in the "speed need" for the average user, so one could therefore ask why should an individual have to replace everything just for that. Separate PCs for the internet would seem to be the ideal.

In fact this obsession with trying to do everything on one computer is a continuation of Gates' idea of being all things to all people.

I have never seen the logic of buying a combined CD Player/alarm clock/telephone/radio/bed warmer/chip pan because if one function blows up what are you going to do with the rest of it.

I am currently using a machine with Fedora Core 5 for the 'net and email and using my old W98SE machine for other things. That way I have less worry and bother with virus and spyware issues, and most documents and pictures are transportable, and I should be able to continue using my W98SE with it's old fashioned but satisfactory soft ware until I am worn out (hardware willing)

I didn't know that you were using a 64 bit PC and thought that you were using an out of date machine like I am ;)
