AlanHo Posted October 21, 2006 Report Share Posted October 21, 2006 I upgraded to the latest version of the free Google Earth and cannot get it working on my desktop. I installed this latest version on my laptop and it works fine - it is just my desktop that is grumpy.It loads OK and the World sits there waiting for the next action. When I enter my home town - the earth rotates until the town comes into view and it then starts to zoom in - whereupon the programme freezes. If you use the task manager to close down the programme and restart it - the same thing happens but at a different point - sometimes it goes further, sometimes less.I uninstalled the programme and reinstalled - no luck.I used Crap Cleaner, RegScrub and Regedit to remove all traces of Google Earth before reinstalling again - this made it better and it went further - before freezing again.I could use Acronis to go back a month to get back to the old version - but this would be inconvenient because it would remove a number of changes on my machine that I want - including a big Windows update. The lack of Google Earth is not worth the hassle.How would you go about tracing what is causing this errant behaviour - just curious - in case it happens to a programme I really need. AlanHo Posted October 21, 2006 Author Report Share Posted October 21, 2006 Thanks pops - the aerial view for my home is much later than Google Earth.I reckon the Google Earth photo is about 3 years old - the Microsoft one must have been taken sometime this summer.However - Google Earth has pictures of some rural areas not included in this programme. Horses for courses methinks.With your suggested programme I have been able to forward some photos to friends of their houses - suggesting they cut their lawns, clean their cars, bring in the washing or whatever is most appropriate. expertec Posted October 21, 2006 Report Share Posted October 21, 2006 Hmm... with this Live one, I can only get a very poor zoom into my area. Not very clear detail at all. With Google earth however, I can see right into my garden, and I know the photo is pretty recent because of the position of the shed in the garden and which car is on the drive! :DI also find Google earth far more user friendly and easier to control. :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Although my area is available, not everywhere can be seen with the "birds eye view" yet.My wife is annoyed because she has the washing hanging on the line. AlanHo Posted October 21, 2006 Author Report Share Posted October 21, 2006 Solution to my problem obtained from another ForumIf you click start/all programs then locate Google Earth in the programs list, when you highlight Google Earth you can select running the programme in either Direct X or Open GL Then whichever one you are currently using to run Google Earth - select the other. It should then run ok.I selected Direct X and it now works fine.It is an option I had not noticed because I was running from a desktop icon - silly me.
