AlanHo
Here we are in South Wales for a week, mixing a spot of business with the pleasure of meeting old friends. We are staying on a working livestock farm way out in the sticks. The serenity and scenery are lovely but the fragrance leaves something to be desired – plus I am acutely aware of a couple of other things.Connecting to the internet via a dial-up connection is sheer purgatory after being accustomed to 2Mb broadband for so long.Navigation around the local area can be most confusing with the towns and villages having names with such a serious vowel deficiency which makes them virtually unpronounceable. Asking a local the way to somewhere produced something like the following explanation….“Take this road to Pig Jelly where you turn left at the Penny Bonk signpost. Continue through Thai Crows to Betties Heaven where you take the turning for Fair Wig via Middle Eye. Come Willie is 4 miles further on”It’s no wonder that the Welsh guard their language and culture so vehemently. Over the centuries navigating here through so many vowel-less and tongue twisting places must have taken its toll on both their sense of direction and sense of humour. Only the persistent and lucky ones have managed to escape across the border – all the others are still going round in ever decreasing, vowel-less circles
deuces wild
Enjoy the smell of the country and the simplicity of the area. Most of all, forget about the computer while you are there. :)

andsome
I know how you feel round that neck of the woods. My last job was working as a rep for a company from Llandovery, which is easy enough to pronounce, but some of the place names defy description. Thos
Enjoy your stay, AlanHo, as I am sure you will.As I was born and brought up in Cheshire, I knew North Wales quite well through holidays and day trips. Later I had occasion to visit much of the South and Central areas and always enjoyed the trips. Mind you, a wet day in Rhyl leaves a lot to be desired. :) Thos. expertec
TRUE :DWhich part (or all?) of my post are you agreeing with? ;) The company was 'Record Industrial Brushes'. I am not meaning to be racist when I say that the manager was a Welsh pig. I ended up with a nervous breakdown and had to retire early.Sure he was a pig, but as long as you're not implying the fact he was Welsh had anything to do with that, then no it's not racist. (If you are implying that, f*** you! :P)A wet day in Llandudno is just as bad.Mmm, Llandudno... was there not so long ago... not my favourite part of Wales that. Thos
Mmm, Llandudno... was there not so long ago... not my favourite part of Wales that. I like Llandudno. I once conducted Landudno Brass Band on the prom. playing Pirates of Penzance.I also heard that very ugly tenor with a heavenly golden voice, Richard Tauber in a concert in Llandudno.Thos. catgate
I remember a story about a young lady asking a young man why he had LUDO tattooed on a certain part of his anatomy. He replied that very shortly she would realise that it really said LLANDUDNO....or words to that effect.Edit.I have a spell checker. I just forget to use it. Thos
I now recall that it was a Yorkshire dalesman who visited Wales on holiday and had immense satisfaction from a certain Myfanwy Morgan and had a tattoo of LLANFAIRPWLLGWYNGYLLGOGERYCHWYRNDROBWLLLLANTYSILIOGOGOGOCH which only showed up in all it's glory when he became enthused, which he often did on St. Georges Day, as Yorkshire dalesmen often do.Otherwise it was LOCH or GOGO depending on which way you looked at it.Thos.
