AlanHo Posted December 4, 2006 Report Share Posted December 4, 2006 Just had my first motoring accident for 40 years or so.I went for diesel to the local Tesco garage - which was very busy. All the pumps had a queue of about 4 cars waiting to get to them.Our queue consisted of two cars at the pumps and two other vehicles line astern in front of me - the one immmediately in front being a Ford van. I stopped behind it leaving about one car's length of free space between us. Suddenly, the two cars at the adjacent pumps moved off, leaving them free. I was tempted to move across to the free pumps but the car behind me was too close for me to reverse back - so I stayed there. The guy in the van in front must have had the same idea - but he failed to check his rear view mirror - slammed his van into reverse and charged backwards. He hit my car with enough force to knoock me back a couple of feet - fortunately I did not have the handbrake on otherwise more damage would surely have resulted.I got him to pull forwards so we could establish the damage - and was not surprised to see his bumper buckled and pushed about 4" into the back of his van and the lower edge of his door bent inwards. We inspected my car and could not see any damage at all - but it was after sundown and the garage lighting was not of the best. We therefore exchanged details and I expected to see the bad news in the light of day this morning.However - there is no visible damage whatsoever - except for two tiny scratches on the paintwork. If you run your hand around the front valance of my car you can feel a small flat spot - but it cannot be detected visually. I guess having it repaired would make the almost imperceptible damage more obvious - so I will not bother.Moral of the story - buy an Audi - they are clearly stronger than a Ford van. Gagaman Posted December 4, 2006 Report Share Posted December 4, 2006 Although audi's are strong, its recommended to let your car check by a authorized audi garage...Some years ago, I experienced almost the same accident... almost no viewable damage, but my car dealer that examined the car discovered damage at the chassis of the car... I was amused by the sacrificial tail light clusters that Iveco used to build into the rear bumpers of their "Daily" vans. It seemed to speak volumes about the rest of the vehicle.
